This will help young people and lower earners, including many women, to build financial resilience through generating more meaningful retirement savings.

We remain committed to the implementation of the 2017 Review ambitions in the mid-2020s.

We have always been clear that changes to the AE framework would be made in a way and at a time that is affordable, balancing the needs of savers, employers and taxpayers.

more like this

answer text
From March 2020 to the end of December 2021 a total of 81 people died while under probation supervision having tested positive for COVID-19 within 60 days of death or where it was confirmed post-mortem as a contributing factor. This data was published in the December edition of the HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) COVID-19 statistics monthly series.

Data on the number of individuals who were recorded as having no stable accommodation at the time of death could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

We recognise how important it is that everyone leaving prison should have somewhere to live, as accommodation enables offenders to hold down a job and reduces the likelihood of them re-offending. Our Prisons White Paper sets out our vision that no-one subject to probation supervision is released from prison homeless. By 2024-25 we will spend £200 million a year to reduce reoffending, including improving prison leavers’ access to accommodation.

To ensure offenders are not homeless upon release, HMPPS has developed a Community Accommodation Service (CAS) so that people leaving prison can access suitable accommodation. CAS brings Approved Premises (AP), Bail Accommodation and Support Service (BASS), and a new provision of transitional accommodation together under the auspices of one accommodation system.

answer text
The Department has been working to ensure we get support as quickly as possible to those individuals and households most financially affected by the coronavirus pandemic. It has been a longstanding principle of Universal Credit (UC) that an assessment of earnings, other income and capital is needed to establish eligibility to target support to those most in need. There may be several reasons why someone is not eligible to receive UC, will have received a nil award or withdrew their claim. Among other reasons, this includes:

speculative claims which were subsequently withdrawn;

found new employment (which may at present include being rehired under the Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme or taken advantage of the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme);

redundancy payments affecting their entitlement;

the last month’s salary taken account. The key principle of UC is that it’s calculated based on income, so if someone’s income from work drops, their UC payment will rise to top it up;

their claim may have been found to be fraudulent; and

Individuals may have capital saved above the £16,000 limit for UC entitlement.

Between 16 March and 3 May there were 1,875,000 declarations made to UC, all of which are processed. Of these:

70 per cent have received a UC payment;

12 per cent had a nil award due to earnings;

seven per cent were withdrawn by the claimant;

one per cent closed due to ineligibility regarding capital rules;

eight per cent closed due to other ineligibility reasons; and

one per cent have outstanding verification preventing payment.

Claimants move from existing benefits to UC when they experience a significant change in their circumstances that triggers a new claim to benefit. We do not centrally collate the number of claimants that have made a new claim to UC as a result of such a change in circumstances.

answer text
We have no immediate plans to implement the provisions in Chapter 1 of Part 4 of the Education and Skills Act which enable the registration and regulation of institutions providing part-time education because we do not intend to bring such settings into the same regulatory system as used for independent schools. However, the Government remains committed to regulating out-of-school education settings. Between November 2015 and January 2016 we conducted a call for evidence to gather information on the number of settings, hours of operation, number of children who attend and the frequency of attendance along with any safeguarding procedures and concerns in these settings. We will respond to the call for evidence and set out next steps in due course.
more like this

answer text
The Department for International Development regularly tracks a range of nutrition and hunger assessments to assess the situation in Africa, including the Global Hunger index, and we are concerned by the situation in Chad, where over 3 million people are food insecure, and in Central African Republic, where over 2.5 million people are food insecure. Food insecurity has been significantly exacerbated by conflict in Central African Republic and around Lake Chad, which has caused the destruction of harvests, forced displacement, and the blockage of trade routes. This year DFID has spent £7m on humanitarian assistance in Chad, with a focus on preventing and treating malnutrition and supporting displaced people, and £18m on humanitarian assistance in the Central African Republic, with a focus on providing essential healthcare, livelihoods assistance and emergency support to the most vulnerable.
more like this
