answer text
4700 visas will be available for HGV drivers delivering food ahead of Christmas 2021. Defra is not going to provide a running commentary on scheme take-up. However, industry engagement has been positive.

Defra continues to work with other Government departments and industries and has already taken action to support the road haulage sector with measures to help to attract new drivers, simplify training, and to encourage people to return to or stay in the industry. The Government encourages all sectors to make employment more attractive to UK domestic workers through offering training, careers options, attractive wages and good working conditions.
more like this

answer text
According to the UN, since the start of 2016, 946 Palestinian-owned structures were demolished in Area C and in East Jerusalem, displacing 1420 people, including 662 children, already surpassing the number of demolitions in the whole of 2015. We are extremely concerned by this trend. We have raised our concerns with the Israeli authorities on numerous occasions. On 28 July, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my Hon. Friend the Member for Bournemouth East (Mr Ellwood), issued a public statement condemning demolitions. On 7 September, during a meeting with Israeli Defence Minister Lieberman in London, Mr Ellwood also raised our concerns about demolitions. We have consulted EU partners on the issue of demolitions and they share our views. The EU collectively condemned demolitions in Foreign Affairs Council conclusions on 18 January.
more like this

answer text The British Government has been following Saudi Arabia’s counter-terrorism and terrorism financing legislation issue closely since it started being implemented on 31 January 2014. There has been no change to the limited level of religious freedom in Saudi Arabia and we are not aware of any persecution of religious groups through this legislation. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office continue to monitor this, including through the annual Human Rights and Democracy report. more like this

answer text We are aware of reports that state-run North Korean bodies have been expropriating large proportions of their workers’ salaries earned in Qatar. We take the issue of the treatment of migrant workers very seriously. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my hon. Friend the Member for Bournemouth East (Mr Ellwood), recently raised human rights issues with the Qatari government during his visit to Doha on 15 October, and the issue of migrant workers was raised with the Emir of Qatar during his visit to the UK on 28-30 October. We support Qatar’s intention to reform the current labour law. We continue to encourage the Qatari government to address human rights concerns and stand ready to support those efforts where we can. more like this
