answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/09/2021 answer text <p>The number of pupils eligible for free school meals (FSM) in England is published as part of the annual ‘Schools, pupils and their characteristics’ statistical release available here: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/schools-pupils-and-their-characteristics-january-2021" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/schools-pupils-and-their-characteristics-january-2021</a>.</p><p>The number of pupils eligible for and claiming FSM in the York local authority in January 2021 is 3,349.</p><p>This data includes pupils at state-funded nursery and primary schools, secondary schools, special schools, pupil referral units, alternative provision academies and free schools.</p><p>The Department for Education funded Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which has provided healthy food and enriching activities to disadvantaged children, has been expanded to every local authority across England this year, backed by up to £220 million. It builds on previous programmes, including last summer’s, which supported around 50,000 children across 17 local authorities.</p><p>York Council has been allocated a maximum of £436,010 to deliver HAF programmes over Easter, summer and Christmas 2021.</p><p>The Department for Work and Pensions have also distributed further funding through the Covid Local Support Grant which supports the hardest hit families and individuals with food and essential utility costs.</p> answering member constituency Colchester answering member printed Will Quince question first answered 20/09/2021 16:13:39 answering member 4423 label Biography information for Will Quince

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/03/2021 answer text <p>The government remains committed to ensuring the most disadvantaged children continue to be supported.</p><p>The department is investing up to £38 million in the National School Breakfast Programme. Overall, this money will set up or improve breakfast clubs in up to 2,450 schools in disadvantaged areas, making them sustainable in the long run. The focus of these clubs has been to target the most disadvantaged areas of the country – including the Department for Education’s Opportunity Areas – to help make sure every child gets the best start in life. We will shortly be providing more information on the future of breakfast club provision, as our current contract is due to expire in July.</p><p>During the periods of school attendance restrictions, schools have been asked to continue to provide support for eligible free school meal pupils learning at home. Schools have been able to choose the approach that works best for them, whether providing a lunch parcel, a locally arranged voucher or accessing the national voucher scheme. So far families have redeemed more than £90 million in supermarket vouchers during this school term.</p><p>The government has taken unprecedented measures during the COVID-19 outbreak to protect the most vulnerable and put in place a strong package of financial support to support families and children. The COVID Winter Support Package was announced in November 2020. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/04/2019 answer text <p>The government supports the provision of nutritious food in schools, which ensures pupils are well nourished, develop healthy eating habits and can concentrate and learn. Under the benefits based criteria, around 1.1 million of the most disadvantaged children are eligible for and claiming free school meals – saving families around £400 per year. Benefits based free meals were extended to disadvantaged further education students in September 2014. A further 1.5 million infants receive a free nutritious meal under the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme. We are also investing up to £26 million to the National Schools Breakfast Programme. question text	To ask Her Majesty’s Government what powers teachers in the state sector have to inspect children's lunch boxes and to confiscate items that they deem unsuitable.

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 25/06/2015 answer text <p>Governing bodies are responsible for their school meals service including their packed lunch policies and whether to ban certain products to promote healthy eating. If schools wish to adopt such policies, we strongly recommend that they consult parents first and ensure that any adopted policy is clearly communicated to parents and pupils.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Schools have common law powers to search pupils, with their consent, for items. There is nothing to prevent schools from having a policy of inspecting lunch boxes for food items that are prohibited under their school food policies. A member of staff may confiscate, keep or destroy such items found as a result of the search if it is reasonable to do so in the circumstances.
