answer text
The Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill includes measures to deliver our manifesto commitment to tackle puppy smuggling. The Bill reduces the number of pet dogs, cats and ferrets that can be moved under the pet travel rules. The Bill also includes powers to introduce further restrictions on pet travel and on the commercial import of cats, dogs and ferrets on welfare grounds, via secondary legislation. In August 2021, the Government launched a consultation on how these powers could be used including proposals to ban the import of puppies under the age of six months. We are currently analysing the replies to this consultation and will publish our response in due course.
more like this

We have utilised those views in our subsequent communications during 2021 to provide further details to the schemes within the plan. There has been a high level of interest and we are working with the industry to ensure Transition Plan can deliver the range of expected outcomes.
more like this

answer text
At the end of this year the UK will have recovered its economic and political independence. The question is whether we can agree with the EU a deeper trading relationship or whether we have a trading relationship based on the 2019 deal, without a free trade agreement (FTA), on the lines of Australia’s.

On leaving the EU on February 1st 2020 the UK took up its independent seat at the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The UK’s independent schedules were submitted to the WTO for certification in 2018 in July (Goods) and December (Services), and when the transition period ends at the end of this year they will form the basis of the UK’s independent trade policy.

GATT Article XXIV permits the establishment of FTAs and Customs Unions as an exception to the most favoured nation principle, but it has no relevance without an agreement between the WTO members in question.
more like this

question text To ask Her Majesty’s Government what representations they have made to the government of Israel about the refusal to allow delegations of British parliamentarians to enter Gaza from Israel since 2009; whether similar requests for entry via Egypt were refused in 2014; and what representations they have made for access in such situations. more like this

answer text
We do not hold the details of delegations of British parliamentarians that have been refused permission to enter Gaza from Israel since 2009. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all travel to Gaza. We therefore do not make representations on behalf of parliamentarians wishing to do so.

Our Embassy in Cairo forwarded a request to the Egyptian authorities for a British aid convoy to access Gaza via the Rafah crossing in 2014, after Egypt changed its policy to only considering applications requested by embassy note verbale. The convoy included one or two parliamentarians. The FCO made clear to the organisers that the visit was at their own risk. The Egyptian authorities agreed access for a reduced version of the convoy, but this was shortly before the Rafah crossing was closed indefinitely in October. We understand the convoy did not therefore gain access.

more like this
