answer text
The Home Office funded the evaluation report conducted by the Responsible Car Wash Scheme and Nottingham Trent University, as part of its grant funding under the Modern Slavery Prevention Fund, a one-off pot of funding to build the evidence base on what interventions work to prevent modern slavery.

The Home Office has shared the evaluation of this project with the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority so the lessons from this project can be incorporated into operational activity to improve standards within the hand car wash sector. The Government has no plans to respond directly to the report.

In addition, the Director of Labour Market Enforcement (DLME) sets out the scale and nature of labour exploitation in their annual strategy to ensure the three labour market enforcement bodies are targeting the highest-risk industries. The most recent 23-24 DLME strategy highlights hand car washes as a sector at risk of labour exploitation.
more like this

answer text
The Roads Investment Strategy 2 reflects this Government’s commitment to upgrading the A303/A358 corridor as a priority for improving connections between the South-West and London and the South-East. The delivery of the corridor is a part of a long-term aim to improve inter- and intra-regional connectivity, by providing a second reliable high-performing connection between the South-West and the South-East, in addition to the M4/M5.

Following an Order of the High Court made on 30 July 2021, the Secretary of State's decision dated 12 November 2020 to grant development consent for the application by Highways England for the proposed A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down (Stonehenge) scheme has been quashed. The Secretary of State must now re-determine that application.

As a live planning case, it would not be appropriate for the Department to comment further on the scheme at this time.

more like this

answer text
On 23 March, SAGE advised that the effect of closing borders would have a negligible effect on spread of COVID-19, based on the fact that numbers of cases arriving from other countries were estimated to be insignificant in comparison with domestic cases, comprising approximately 0.5% of total domestic cases.

The Home Office and SAGE have been keeping these figures under review. The numbers of passengers arriving in the UK are extremely small, and as such, there is uncertainty in any estimate at such a low level; however, we are confident that the percentage remains under 0.5% of total domestic cases.

more like this

answer text
Parts of the former HMP Reading are listed and the level of services, such as security, routine maintenance and utilities, have been reduced to a level which is appropriate to ensure that it remains safe and secure until its final disposal. In 2015-16, the last full financial year for which figures are available, the maintenance and upkeep of the former HMP Reading, including maintenance, utilities and security was £256,798.

The Ministry of Justice and its external planning and development advisers are currently working in close collaboration with Historic England, Reading Borough Council and others to ensure that the historic integrity of the site is documented and preserved after disposal. We will prepare a planning brief for approval by Reading Borough Council during the latter half of 2017. Following this, we anticipate that the site will be marketed for sale for residential development.

The MoJ is committed to providing best value to the tax payer through maximising the financial value of the site whilst safeguarding its heritage value for future generations.
