answer text <p>This Government takes the mental health of the police workforce very seriously and we are committed to making improvements in wellbeing support for officers and staff.</p><p>Through the Police Covenant, we continue to work with policing partners to ensure those who work in policing and their families get the support and protection they need. We have already delivered pre-deployment mental health support for all new starters and established a Chief Medical Officer for policing.</p><p>Suicide is a particularly sensitive and difficult issue and usually involves a combination of many factors, which means that it is not straightforward to classify by default as a work-related incident. There is an existing system in which deaths are examined by a Coroner and a Coroner can already refer cases to the Health and Safety Executive, or other public body, if they consider there is an ongoing risk to others.</p><p>Any suicide is devastating and that is why, through the Police Covenant, we have developed a priority work stream on suicide prevention. The Home Office is also providing funding to establish and run the first year of a 24/7 Mental Health Crisis Support line for current and former members of the police workforce.</p>

answer text <p>The Office for National Statistics (ONS) publish data on suicides by occupation in England and Wales. Data on occupation is coded using the Standard Occupation Classification which includes a code of senior police officers, police officers (sergeant and below), and police community support officers.</p><p>This Government takes the physical and mental health of the police workforce very seriously and we are committed to making improvements in wellbeing support for officers and staff. Since 2019, the Home Office has provided over £14m to the National Police Wellbeing Service.</p><p>Through the Police Covenant, we continue to work with policing partners to ensure those who work in policing and their families get the support and protection they need. answer text <p>The death of any police officer is a tragedy. The Government and police leaders take this matter very seriously and are working to support the mental and physical wellbeing of all police officers and staff.</p><p>We have invested in programmes which offer help directly to officers and staff. This includes £7.5million to fund the development of the National Police Wellbeing Service, which was launched in 2019. The service is helping forces to identify where there is most risk of impacts on mental health, developing work around building resilience, as well as supporting those who need it in response to traumatic events.</p><p>The Government has also accelerated work to introduce a Police Covenant, which will ensure our police get the support and protection they need. The Covenant will be enshrined in law, with provisions being brought forward later this session, and the Home Secretary will have a duty to report annually to Parliament on the work undertaken.</p><p>Our focus will be on health and wellbeing, physical protection and support for families, with a real emphasis on mental health support. Together with our policing partners we are working to ensure the Covenant has a lasting impact on both those who work, or have worked in, policing.</p>
