answer text
The Minister for the Middle East, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, set out on 26 January 2023 that Israel has a right to self-defence but security operations must be in line with international law. Where security measures are required, we encourage Israel to deploy these in a way which minimises tension and the use of appropriate force. In instances where there have been accusations of excessive use of force, we advocate for swift, transparent investigations. We will continue to stress the importance of the Israeli security forces providing appropriate protection to the Palestinian civilian population, particularly the need to protect children, and urge restraint in the use of live fire.
more like this

answer text
We regularly remind the Palestinian leadership of the need for democratic renewal through free and fair national elections held across the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, as set out in the Oslo Accords. The report from International Crisis Group is well-researched and raises important questions about the ability of the Palestinian people's ability to enjoy their democratic rights. We do not necessarily agree with every recommendation in the report but we share the view that those who come to power through elections "enjoy the greatest possible degree of popular legitimacy".
more like this

We are in close consultation with international partners about how to encourage the parties to reverse negative trends on the ground, including through a regional approach to peace, and encouraging meaningful bilateral negotiations. We believe that negotiations will only succeed when they are conducted between Israelis and Palestinians, supported by the international community. We call on both parties to make constructive and open steps towards a return to dialogue and a return to cooperation.
more like this

answer text
The UK views the Palestinian Authority (PA) as the legitimate representatives of the Palestinian people. We are supportive of Hamas-Fatah reconciliation attempts, and of the PA returning to resume government functions in Gaza, helping to improve the dire humanitarian and economic situation and restore effective and accountable governance. Genuine and democratic national elections for all Palestinians are crucial to the establishment of a viable and sovereign Palestinian state. To this end, we call on all Palestinian factions to seek common ground and to work together to pursue a positive path towards democracy for the full benefit of the Palestinian people.
more like this

answer text
We are committed to the objective of an independent, sovereign and prosperous Palestinian state, living side by side with a safe and secure Israel. That is why we put such emphasis on strengthening Palestinian institutions and fostering sustainable economic growth. Economic progress can never be a substitute for a political settlement, but it is vital in the interim that Palestinians see tangible improvements in their daily lives. The UK will recognise a Palestinian state at a time when it best serves the objective of peace. Bilateral recognition in itself cannot end the occupation. Without a negotiated settlement the occupation and the problems that come with it will continue. We consistently call for an immediate end to all actions that undermine the viability of the two-state solution and are encouraging both sides to maintain calm and avoid taking actions which make peace more difficult to achieve.
more like this
