answer text
As stated in the National Cyber Security Strategy, the target is for the majority of commodity products and services available in the UK in 2021 to be more secure because they have their default security settings enabled by default or have security integrated into their design. We want to make the UK one of the safest places in the world to do business and be online. The Code of Practice is a step in that direction, by clarifying for manufacturers what good practice looks like. The sector is evolving and whilst the market continues to develop, DCMS will be working closely with manufacturers, including those that are looking to create new internet-connected consumer products to ensure that security is built into smart devices by design. Currently, we are seeking to achieve buy-in from manufacturers that cover a significant proportion of the UK.

We also recognise the need for regulation that is based on the Code of Practice, and have already commenced work in this space. More information, including the scope of products likely to be covered, will be available in 2019.

answer text
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, in conjunction with the National Cyber Security Centre, worked in close collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including government, industry partners, consumer organisations, academics and technical experts. The report’s publication, and draft Code of Practice, is intended to stimulate further dialogue with industry, academia and civil society over the coming months, with comments sought by 25 April 2018. This will ensure Government and industry activity support the review and that it collectively balances the need to create effective incentives for manufacturers, the supply chain and retailers, while continuing to encourage innovation in new technologies.
more like this

answer text
As outlined in the National Cyber Security Strategy, the Government is undertaking an extensive cyber security skills programme to ensure the UK has a self-sustaining pipeline of talent providing the skills the economy needs. As part of this programme, we have ensured all Further Education digital courses have a mandatory cyber security component, while Computing Science degrees accredited by the British Computer Society must now include comprehensive teaching on cyber security and have generated some material to support this. This is helping to ensure the current and future generation of IT graduates and professionals have the skills needed for secure programming when developing web-based products.

As part of our cyber skills programme, we are also undertaking extensive work in schools, with apprentices and helping non-cyber professionals, ensuring the UK workforce continues to have the skills needed to keep the digital economy secure. In addition, the Government works closely with industry to promote the need for good cyber security practices. The National Cyber Security Strategy makes it clear we are building a secure Internet and sets out an objective for “the majority of online products and services coming into use [to] become ‘secure by default’ by 2021.
