answer text
The Government is committed to growing trade between the UK and Indonesia. The Prime Minister, my right hon. Friend the Member for Witney (Mr Cameron) appointed my hon. Friend, the Member for Gloucester (Richard Graham) as Trade Envoy to Indonesia in November 2012. He has visited Indonesia six times since his appointment and has introduced British companies to senior decision makers in the Indonesian government and the private sector, as well as promoting the benefits of doing business in Indonesia at events across the UK. British exports of goods to Indonesia grew by 2.6% in 2012 and 8% in 2013 .

Indonesia is also part of the Government’s Overseas Business Network Initiative, through which the British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia provides additional complementary services to British companies seeking to do business in Indonesia. This initiative has enabled a doubling in the assistance offered to British companies.

The Government announced the establishment of the UK ASEAN Business Council (UKABC) in November 2011. The UKABC’s purpose is to facilitate a step change in trade between the UK and South East Asia by raising awareness of the opportunities in the region and providing practical advice on doing business there. This year the UKABC has organised four events specifically focussed on Indonesia; representatives from the UK Trade and Investment Indonesia team or the British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia have also participated in the UKABC’s regionally-focussed events.

answer text
Following the inauguration of Basuki (Ahok) Tjahaja Purnama, as Governor of Jakarta in November, there were some small-scale protests. However, there was also a significant counter movement on social media and public demonstrations of support from a campaign called ‘Muslims in support of Ahok’. Governor Purnama is the first Chinese-Indonesian and second Christian to become Governor of Jakarta, and it is testament to Indonesia’s traditions of religious tolerance and respect for diversity that the great majority are supportive of him taking up the position of governor.

Our Ambassador designate met the Indonesian Minister for Law, Justice & Human Rights on 18 November and raised the rights of religious minorities and freedom of expression. We also maintain a regular dialogue with religious leaders, civil society and government officials on freedom of religion or belief. The third EU-Indonesia Human Rights Dialogue was held on 12 November and in response to concerns we raised the new Indonesian government underlined the importance they attach to tackling discrimination against religious minorities.

answer text Our Ambassador designate met the Indonesian Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights on 18 November and raised the rights of religious minorities and freedom of expression. He was assured that the bill for the Protection of Religious People/Minorities would be submitted to parliament soon. We also maintain a regular dialogue with religious leaders, civil society and government officials on freedom of religion or belief; as well as supporting project work, such as human rights training. The third EU-Indonesia Human Rights Dialogue was held on 12 November and, in response to concerns we raised, the new Indonesian government underlined the importance they attach to tackling discrimination against religious minorities. We are encouraged that the newly inaugurated Indonesian government has already taken some positive steps to promote freedom of religion or belief. The Minister of Religious Affairs has announced plans to develop legislation to strengthen protection to adherents of all religious beliefs and the Minister for Home Affairs has stated that he is investigating how district and regional governments can better protect the rights of minorities.

answer text
Indonesia has a strong tradition of religious diversity and tolerance and in general those of minority faiths in Indonesia, including any British visitors, are able to practice their religion. Various denominations of Christian churches are well represented across Indonesia. The Jewish community in Indonesia is very small, although there is at least one working synagogue. However, we are concerned that there has been a rise of localised instances of inter-and intra-religious conflict, and examples where the rights of religious minority groups have not been protected.

The former Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Rt Hon Baroness Warsi, convened meetings of international leaders, including with the Foreign Minister of Indonesia, to generate practical steps to promote freedom of religion or belief, and to fight religious intolerance within our societies. Our Ambassador in Jakarta has discussed these issues with Indonesian Ministers, civil society, and religious leaders. We have supported projects to improve respect for freedom of religion or belief. We also raise freedom of religion and belief concerns at the annual EU-Indonesia Human Rights Dialogue. We continue to monitor the situation and raise any concerns with the Government of Indonesia.
