answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/08/2021 answer text <p>The Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) provides the public with a route for the escalation and removal of suspected phishing campaigns. The automated SERS processes emails received from the public, and if a malicious web address (URL) is identified in the email, a take down request is submitted to the hosting provider. To date we have identified more than 97,500 individual malicious URLs for removal which equates to 50,5000 individual scam campaigns. Multiple reports of the same scams have been forwarded to SERS. The total number of reports to SERS stands at 6.5m as at 30th June 2021.</p><p> </p><p>SERS is one tool in HMG’s response to cybercrime, and is intended to empower people to simply forward suspicious emails to the NCSC for action. Full details of the NCSC’s comprehensive response to the proactive identification and removal of malicious activity on the internet can be found in its Active Cyber Defence Year 4 report. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/03/2021 answer text <p>Direct marketing, including spam emails, are regulated by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) which is enforced by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the independent data protection regulator. PECR regulates unsolicited marketing emails and specifies organisations must only send these to individuals who have agreed to receive them, except where there is a clearly defined customer relationship.</p><p>The ICO has the powers to impose civil monetary penalties of up to £500,000 for serious contraventions of the PECR. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/06/2020 answer text <p>The Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) was launched on 21 April as part of the government’s Cyber Aware campaign. This is a UK-wide campaign promoted through paid activity, press and stakeholder engagement.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>The campaign materials were shared with Scottish Government and other Scottish public sector organisations, including Education Scotland, Scottish Business Resilience Centre and Trading Standards Scotland. We have also worked closely with Police Scotland. All have played an essential role in helping to amplify the SERS in local communities.</p><p>The SERS was promoted on social media and through paid search, both of which were targeted at audiences in Scotland. This initiative by the NCSC makes a significant contribution to the Government’s aim to make the UK the safest place to live and work online.</p><p> </p><p>As of 14 May, the Suspicious Email Reporting Service has had more than 300,000 emails submitted, leading to over 2,500 unique URLs, which resulted in 600 bogus sites being taken down. Examples of threats the NCSC has removed with the help of the reporting service include:</p><p>- Scam web pages that have been flagged include mock-ups of official GOV.uk and TV licencing websites (visitors are lured into giving their billing information to scammers posing as these legitimate organisations).</p><p> </p><p>- Scam web pages purporting to sell coronavirus linked bogus products such as testing kits, face makes and even vaccines. (The NCSC noted a rise in cyber crime exploiting the coronavirus pandemic last month.)</p><p> </p><p>This automated email reporting service makes it easier than ever for people to help protect others from falling victim to scams. To use the reporting service, people are asked to simply forward suspect emails to <a href="mailto:report@phishing.gov.uk" target="_blank">report@phishing.gov.uk</a>. The Government is, however, continuing to put out general advice to the public on staying safe online.</p><p>On 21 April the Government launched a revised Cyber Aware campaign, to coincide with the launch of the NCSC’s new Suspicious Email Reporting Service. The new campaign will:</p><ul><li>Provide the public and key stakeholders (industry, academia, tech community etc) with the assurance that HMG and the Intelligence and law enforcement community are working on their behalf to minimise the cyber threat;</li><li>Empower the public and micro-businesses to understand the best ways to stay safe online and feel empowered to take necessary protective actions; and</li><li>Support NCSC and wider efforts to combat the threat ‘at source’, taking down or blocking malicious URLs and SMS messages, and working behind the scenes to stop the threat reaching the public. We will prioritise areas where there is the most need for user behaviour to change, or there is active public concern.</li></ul><p>We also recently launched a gov.uk page on coronavirus-related fraud and cybercrime. The page includes easy-to-follow steps for people to better protect themselves and signposts other relevant advice and tips. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/12/2014 answer text <p>The need to tackle cyber crime was identified as a key objective of the Government’s Cyber Security Strategy, which is underpinned by £860 million of funding over five years through the National Cyber Security Programme (NCSP). Around 10% of this has been invested in improving the capabilities of law enforcement agencies to respond to cyber crime.</p><p>The National Cyber Crime Unit in the National Crime Agency is responsible for tackling some of the most serious cases of malware - which is often delivered using phishing techniques and which is responsible for infecting computers and stealing banking and other information. This work was undertaken in conjunction with their international <br>partners, to tackle those cyber criminals operating internationally, as well as the cyber teams that have been built in the network of Regional Organised Crime Units throughout England and Wales, also using NCSP funding.</p><p><br>The Government is committed to supporting the public and industry to better protect themselves from this type of criminality. The NCSP also funds the Cyber Streetwise awareness campaign, which encourages the public and Small and Medium Enterprises to adopt safer online behaviour. Phase 2 of the campaign launched in October 2014, including a refreshed website with further advice and support. Cyberstreetwise.com has had over 170,000 page views on the updated website since October – this is nearly three times higher than at the same time of phase one.</p><p><br>The Government also funds Action Fraud, run by the City of London Police, which is the central reporting point for fraud and financially-motivated cyber crime. This service also provides information on the latest fraud threats, including phishing emails, and individuals can sign up to be alerted when new threats emerge.
