The Home Secretary received advice from law enforcement agencies on the threat and risk to public safety from high energy rifles, including .50 calibre rifles.<\/p>
At the Home Secretary\u2019s request, we have received further advice from the National Crime Agency on whether there are alternatives to prohibition which would reduce the risk, in particular more secure storage arrangements. In light of that advice, the Home Secretary has decided that further detailed consideration is required on how best to tighten controls on high energy rifles. The Transparency of Donations and Loans etc. (Northern Ireland Political Parties) Order 2018 introduced transparency around donations and loans to political parties in Northern Ireland from July 2017. The date set in the legislation for introduction of the transparency regime followed a consultation process and represented a broad consensus across the Northern Ireland political parties.<\/p>

The Government has no plans in place to legislate to facilitate the publication of pre-2017 data. Following the announcement we are implementing comprehensive plans to raise awareness of the change among people who may be affected.<\/p>

The Department has written directly to mixed-age couples who are already in receipt of Pension Credit or Housing Benefit for pensioners to inform them of the changes and encourage them to find out what it could mean for them. Importantly the letters explain that mixed age couples already claiming Pension Credit and/or Housing Benefit for pensioners immediately before 15 May will not be affected for as long as they remain in receipt of either benefit after that date, and that their State Pension will not be affected.<\/p>
