The Minister for Women and Equalities recently gave evidence to the Women and Equalities Select Committee inquiry into abortion law in Northern Ireland, alongside the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. The Minister for Women and Equalities said she was aware of the cases where women are not getting access to information about relevant services, including the travel scheme to enable women normally resident in Northern Ireland to access abortion services in England.<\/p>

All the significant recommendations from Lord Ashcroft\u2019s Veterans\u2019 Transition Review have been implemented and are now routine business for the Ministry of Defence (MOD). In May 2018, Lord Ashcroft stepped down as the Prime Minister\u2019s Special Representative on Veterans\u2019 Transition. In his letter to the Prime Minister, he said that while work remains to be done, \u201cI am pleased with the many practical changes that have been brought about as a result of the Transition Review, and that the whole issue of veterans\u2019 transition now has a higher profile in government and beyond<\/em>.\u201d The full text of Lord Ashcroft\u2019s letter to the Prime Minister, along with a copy of the Review, follow-up reports and associated documents can be found at the following address:<\/p>http://www.veteranstransition.co.uk/<\/strong><\/p> <\/p>
This Government is not complacent, and we are working to further support our military veterans. In November 2018 the UK, Scottish and Welsh Governments published an evidence-based \u2018Strategy for our veterans<\/em>\u2019 which will work to ensure veterans\u2019 issues are considered, coordinated and delivered across the UK (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/strategy-for-our-veterans).<\/strong> This builds on existing progress, including in health issues where specific care pathways for veterans have been developed around mental health and prosthetic aftercare.<\/p> <\/p>
As part of the Strategy we are also this year introducing a holistic transition policy. Transition support currently provided by the MOD largely focuses on employment support, delivered by the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), which supports Service leavers in their transition from military to civilian life through a range of career and employment support services including skills development workshops, seminars, resettlement training advice, vocational training courses, career consultancy, one-to-one guidance and job finding support. \u202fHowever, transition is far wider than finding employment, and relates to the significant life changing processes which affect both the Service person and their immediate family through the entire time they are within or connected to the Armed Forces, through to discharge and beyond, which need to be appropriately addressed to ensure successful transition into civilian life.\u202f This will include transition to civilian health care.<\/p>

An indicator for ex British Armed Forces was added to the Mental Health Services Data Set in 2017/18.<\/p>

However, data is still in its infancy and indicator completion rates are currently only at 13%. NHS England is investigating ways to improve this. The Department for Transport does not hold this information. The Government is responsible for setting the regulatory structure within which licensing authorities in England issue taxi and private hire vehicle service licences.<\/p>
<\/p>
Licensing authorities have a duty to ensure that any person to whom they grant a licence is a fit and proper person. As part of this assessment all licensing authorities require an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check; this provides details of convictions and cautions and may include additional information which a chief police officer reasonably believes is relevant and ought to be disclosed.<\/p>
<\/p>
The Department is consulting on draft statutory guidance to be issued to licensing authorities on how they should use the extensive existing powers to protect children and vulnerable adult when using these services. This includes a policy on the assessment of previous criminal convictions. The draft policy places passenger safety as the priority while enabling past offenders to sufficiently evidence that they have been successfully rehabilitated so that they might obtain a licence.<\/p>

We are appalled by the findings of the UN Commission on Human Rights\u2019 report on South Sudan, published in February, which for the second year running concludes that many of the abuses and violations reported could amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. Our efforts to support change in South Sudan primarily focus on maximising the chances of success of the peace agreement signed in September 2018, as without progress on this there is little hope for improvement. As part of this we have frequently urged African Union members, particularly from the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development, to ensure that the parties to the agreement meet their commitments to deliver sustainable peace, and to ensure accountability for those who work against it. In addition, through our diplomatic engagement, we urge the Government of South Sudan to implement its peace commitments and to address the human rights situation. This has included recent engagement in Juba and Geneva where we have raised the findings of the report as part of discussions regarding the renewal of the mandate for the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan.<\/p>"}
