The United Kingdom has one of the most comprehensive immunisation programmes in the world and vaccines coverage for most programmes is generally high. We are reviewing how to improve vaccine uptake overall as part of the NHS Long Term Plan. The United Kingdom has a number of key components in place to achieve high coverage of vaccinations. This includes national co-ordination of our vaccination programmes, fully trained staff, and access to relevant information.

The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV) is offered to adults aged 65 and over and children and adults in a clinical risk group. PPV coverage for the 2019-20 financial year was 69.0% (10,115,593/ 6,975,469) in adults aged 65 years and older. These results do not show the impact of the COVID-19 as most individuals were offered the vaccine prior to when lockdown measures were enforced. PPV vaccine coverage estimates for the 2020-21 financial year will reflect adults turning 65 and over from April 2020 to March 2021, which covers the duration when lockdown measures were enforced. This data will be published in summer of 2021.

The shingles vaccine is offered to those turning 70 or 78 years old up to their 80th birthday. Disruption to the delivery of the vaccine caused by COVID-19 and shielding guidance accounts for lower coverage. FCDO travel advice remains under constant review to ensure it reflects our latest assessment of risks to British nationals and has the key information and advice they need to plan travel. In making decisions about travel advice, the FCDO considers the scientific evidence. Each country and territory is assessed individually. Public Health England and the National Travel Health Network and Centre, the organisations mandated to provide health advice to British nationals travelling overseas, assess the risk to an individual of exposure to the virus in each destination. This assessment is based on a number of key indicators, including virus incidence rates, trends in incidence and deaths, testing capacity, test positivity rates, and other international epidemic intelligence. We also draw on the latest reporting from our network of embassies and high commissions to take account of other risks related to the pandemic.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4057", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Nigel Adams"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Selby and Ainsty"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Nigel Adams"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2020-10-28", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2020-10-28T13:17:42.67Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "208"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2020-10-21", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Travel Information: Coronavirus"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what steps he is taking to ensure that the advice given to travellers and holidaymakers is clear and up to date for every destination abroad during the covid-19 pandemic.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/411", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mr Barry Sheerman"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Huddersfield"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Mr Barry Sheerman"} ], "uin" : "106899"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1245606", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Work and Pensions"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1245606/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

People who are infected with Covid-19, or self-isolating in line with Government guidance are eligible for ESA, subject to the normal conditions of entitlement. We have removed the waiting days and claimants will be treated as having Limited Capability for Work in ESA without the requirement for fit notes or a Work Capability Assessment from day one. Households may also be able to claim Universal Credit where eligible. New claim advances are available urgently if a claimant needs financial support. These advances allow claimants to receive up to 100% of their estimated Universal Credit payment upfront. The Budget already announced that claimants will be able to access advances via phone or online, instead of having to attend the jobcentre. This applies to all claimants, including those who are required to self-isolate.

Shielding was paused on 1 August 2020 in England. However, it is important that clinically extremely vulnerable people continue to take extra care, particularly as infection rates rise again. On 13 October, the Government published new guidance to the clinically extremely vulnerable that advises additional things they are advised to do to keep themselves safe at each local COVID-19 alert level. This new guidance is designed to offer practical and proportionate advice to help people protect themselves and minimise the need to introduce restrictive shielding advice.
