There are many ways in which DFID protects the livelihoods of small-scale farmers, for example by helping 6 million farmers in 40 countries across Asia and Africa adapt to climate change, securing the right to land and property for 5.8 million people (including 2.6 million women), and funding research into new technologies to increase productivity. We will make further programming decisions during the forthcoming spending review.<\/p>"}

The then-Minister of State for the Home Office, Lynne Featherstone, visited Burma in January, in her role as UK Champion for Tackling Violence Against Women. She raised this issue with senior members of the Burmese government, including Ministers of the President\u2019s Office, U Soe Thane and U Aung Min, and also with Deputy Foreign Minister U Thant Kyaw.
In our efforts to promote UNSCR 1325 (on Women, Peace and Security) in Burma, in addition to high-level lobbying, the UK has encouraged women\u2019s full participation in the peace process, supported the drafting of forthcoming legislation on violence against women, and funded work to increase women\u2019s participation in the electoral process. We have supported access to justice for the survivors of sexual violence. As one of the largest humanitarian donors to Kachin and Rakhine states, we have funded the coordination of activities to prevent violence against women.<\/p>"}

The UK Government has not provided any funding directly to the government of Burma in developing the National Education Law. DFID, together with other International Development Partners, has funded technical inputs to the Burmese Ministry of Education\u2019s evidence-based review of the education sector. This review has informed the development of the National Education Law. I met with Burma\u2019s Deputy Minister for Education in January and encouraged the government of Burma to consult with donors and civil society on further rules relating to the National Education Law.<\/p>

DFID is working with members of the Nigerian New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition partnership to promote responsible agricultural investment in Nigeria. This includes adoption of the internationally endorsed Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests. The New Alliance partnership in Nigeria has already helped improve market access to 7,290 smallholder farmers and has created 22,670 jobs.<\/p>
<\/p>
DFID is supporting the Nigerian Presidential Technical Committee on Land Reform to roll out systematic land titling and registration across the country. Under our Growth and Employment in States project, 33,500 parcels of land have already been demarcated and certificates of occupancy are being issued. These measures are specifically aimed at protecting the rights of farmers at risk of involuntary relocation.<\/p>
