The UK is deeply concerned by the dismissal of an appeal against the decision of Russia's Supreme Court to categorise the Jehovah's Witnesses as extremists. This ruling effectively criminalises the peaceful worship of some 175,000 Russian citizens and is at odds with the right to religious freedom which is enshrined in the Russian Constitution.<\/p>
I issued a statement on 18 July expressing our concerns. The Government is concerned about the situation faced by the Bahá'ís in Yemen. This is particularly the case in areas under the control of the Houthis and forces loyal to ex-president Saleh, where they have faced persecution due to their religious beliefs. The UK has raised the issue with the Government of Yemen and highlighted their plight through public diplomacy. Following the Lakanal House fire the Coroner made a number of recommendations and DCLG followed up on all of them, including priority funding for new fire safety guidance and commissioning new research. Other action which has been taken since 2013 to improve fire safety has included: the introduction of new regulations on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in 2015; the continuing Fire Kills communications campaign; and research which was commissioned into fire safety issues.<\/p>
An independent expert panel has been set up to provide advice to the Government on any immediate measures needed to make buildings safe following the Grenfell Tower fire. The panel will be led by Sir Ken Knight, former London Fire Commissioner and former Government Chief Fire and Rescue Adviser. It will consider safety measures, policies, inspection and regulation, taking account of both the Grenfell Tower fire and ongoing fire safety inspections. The Department has allocated over £9 billion in school condition funding nationally from 2011-12 to 2017-18. Allocations total £1.4 billion a year in every year from 2011-12 to 2017-18. In addition, the £4.4 billion Priority School Rebuilding Programme is rebuilding or refurbishing those school buildings in the worst condition across the country.<\/p> Barnsley East is part of Barnsley local authority, which received condition funding (including Devolved Formula Capital, provided directly to schools) of over £24 million from the 2011-12 to 2017-18 financial years, an average of £3.5 million per year. This totals £4.7 million in 2011-12, £4.1 million in 2012-13, £3.5 million in 2013-14, £2.7 million in 2014-15, £2.8 million in 2015-16, £3.4 million in 2016-17 and £3.5 million in 2017-18.
