We do not keep information on gang-related crime, but we do have information at force level about trends in knife crime, gun crime, and homicide in the West Midlands and Coventry which are offences often associated with gang activity. The latest year-on-year data comparing June 2018 to June 2017 show that knife crime has increased by 18% in the West Midlands compared to England and Wales as a whole which has seen a 12% increase.

When looking at the 5-year trend, knife crime in the West Midlands is up by 72%, which is higher than the rise for England and Wales in the same period (61%). Whilst gun crime in the West Midlands has risen by 14% between 2013/14 and 2016/17, this is lower than the rise witnessed in England and Wales (31%). Over the past five years, homicide in the West Midlands has gone up by 24%, compared to 36% in England and Wales.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4399", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Victoria Atkins"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Louth and Horncastle"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Victoria Atkins"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-11-20", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-11-20T17:29:08.303Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-10-15", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Gangs: Crime"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment he has made of trends in the level of gang-related crime in (a) Coventry, (b) the West Midlands and (c) the UK in the last five years.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/308", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mr Jim Cunningham"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Coventry South"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Mr Jim Cunningham"} ], "uin" : "179102"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/987778", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/987778/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

EU nationals currently have an automatic right to rent by reason of their nationality under section 21 of the Immigration Act 2014. Any changes to this position, including to bring EU nationals within scope of the Immigration Act 2016 powers of eviction, will be considered as part of the design of the new global immigration system to be introduced after the EU-exit implementation period. The powers in the 2016 Act enable landlords to evict an individual where the Home Office has served a notice that they are letting to a disqualified person. These notices will only be served where an individual has failed to regularise their stay, leave the UK or comply with directions, and only after a careful examination of the individual’s circumstances and where there are no genuine obstacles to them leaving the UK.

There are many complex factors which contribute to and affect the financial sustainability of landlords in this sector. Research carried out by the National Federation of ALMOs shows over three quarters of their tenants come onto Universal Credit with pre-existing rent arrears.

Arrears are usually temporary and the majority of claimants do succeed in paying their rent, managing their monthly payments and clearing their arrears over time

We continually review and improve Universal Credit in response to feedback. In 2018, following Autumn Budget 2017, we have implemented a comprehensive and wide-ranging package of improvements worth £1.5 billion. These include making advances of up to 100% of the indicative award available (from the start of a claim) and increasing the repayment period to 12 months, removing the 7 waiting days, providing an additional payment of 2 weeks of Housing Benefit to support claimants when they transition to Universal Credit, and changing how claimants in temporary accommodation receive support for their housing costs.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4014", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Sir Alok Sharma"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Reading West"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Alok Sharma"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-11-20", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-11-20T16:14:52.353Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "29"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Work and Pensions"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Work and Pensions"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-10-08", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Universal Credit: Private Rented Housing"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, what recent assessment she has made of the effect of the introduction of universal credit on the financial sustainability of private sector landlords.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4648", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Laura Smith"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Crewe and Nantwich"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Laura Smith"} ], "uin" : "176609"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/982597", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Home Office"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/982597/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Under Articles 17(1)(g) and (h) of the draft Withdrawal Agreement with the EU the Government agreed that applications to the Scheme will not cost any more than the cost of a comparable document for UK nationals and that applications from holders of valid Permanent Residence documentation or indefinite leave to remain will be free of charge. A Bomber Command Clasp was approved by Her Majesty the Queen following the Independent Military Medal Review (2012). The Committee on the Grant of Honours, Decorations and Medals Committee (the “HD Committee”) is re-establishing the Advisory Military Sub-Committee, with an independent chair, to examine historic military medals claims. Any recommendation from that Sub-Committee will then go back to the HD Committee to advise Her Majesty the Queen. The Sub-Committee is expected to start work in 2019. The Sub-Committee has not been asked to re-consider the issue of a medal for Bomber Command; but it will be open to the Sub-Committee to review historic claims as it sees fit.
