The Research, Information and Communications Unit (RICU) was established in 2007 under the Prevent strand of HMG’s CONTEST strategy. RICU aims to understand and counter terrorist and extremist ideologies to reduce the risk to the UK, its citizens, and its interests overseas.

RICU provides analysis on terrorist use of propaganda and exploitation of the internet to inform the UK’s counter-terrorism system. To support this crucial objective RICU undertakes open-source monitoring to better understand the media, online and communications environment as it relates to terrorism and extremism. This open-source monitoring identifies a range of material that is shared and discussed within these spaces, including topics or media that terrorist and extremist groups are seeking to exploit.

All RICU data collection and analysis complies with relevant legislation. Ministers have authorised RICU’s work since it was established in 2007, and through subsequent updates to the CONTEST strategy (in 2011 and 2018) and regularly receive RICU outputs.

The work of RICU is crucial to the delivery of Prevent and has helped to position the UK at the forefront of the battle against terrorist propaganda, particularly online terrorist content.

Prevent remains a vital tool to divert people from dangerous and poisonous ideologies. We are now implementing all recommendations from the recent Independent Review of Prevent, paving the way for a more transparent, efficient and sustainable programme.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4462", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Tom Tugendhat"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Tonbridge and Malling"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Tom Tugendhat"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2023-03-06", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : {"_value" : "153945"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2023-03-06T15:23:14.9Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2023-02-27", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Research, Information and Communications Unit"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether any (a) sitting MPs, (b) former MPs, (c) political activists and (d) political organisations have had their information collected by the Research, Information and Communication Unit since its formation.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4764", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Bell Ribeiro-Addy"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Streatham"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Bell Ribeiro-Addy"} ], "uin" : "153946"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1583311", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Home Office"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1583311/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
There are no plans to allow those referred under Pathway 3 of the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS) to submit biometrics in the UK after they have cleared their initial security checks.

The government has put in place a robust process, including security checks and capturing of biometrics, to ensure the safe relocation of Afghans to the UK while maintaining an effective border.

We are pleased that, for many, initial security checks have now been completed, which allows us to notify them of the outcome and provide advice on next steps, including on travel to a Visa Application Centre (VAC).

They consider the whole remuneration package of those working in the public sector when forming their recommendations, including the substantially more generous pensions available, on average, for public sector workers.

As part of the PRB process, HM Treasury publishes economic evidence to PRBs. HM Treasury published its economic evidence to PRBs for the 2023/24 pay round in January.
