The government has reformed GCSEs to be more rigorous and to match expectations in countries with high performing education systems. As part of this reform process, a number of GCSE subjects are being withdrawn.

Ofqual, the independent qualifications regulator, has published a list of legacy GCSEs, AS and A levels and the date of the last available opportunity to undertake examinations in each subject. This also sets out the reason for withdrawal where the legacy qualifications are not being replaced as part of the reforms.

The list can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/timings-for-the-withdrawal-of-legacy-gcses-as-and-a-levels.

The Industrial Strategy aims to make the UK the best place in the world to start or grow a business. The Start Up Loans programme helps individuals access the necessary finance to start or grow a business in the UK. In addition to receiving a loan, applicants are offered free business support and access to a business mentor for 12 months after receiving funding, thereby enhancing their chances of success. Individuals can borrow between £500 and £25,000 and loan repayment periods are between one and five years.

The Start Up Loans programme is managed by the Start Up Loans Company, a subsidiary of the British Business Bank. At the end of July 2018 the Start Up Loans programme had lent £436m to over 57,000 entrepreneurs.

The majority of state funded state secondary schools offered GCSE courses in design and technology in 2017. In 2016/17, 2,922 state funded secondary schools (85% of all state funded secondary schools) had one or more pupils taking a Design and Technology (D&T) GCSE. Data for 2018 will not be available until October 2018.

The Department does not provide financial support or training to existing D&T teachers in relation to the new GCSE. Training is available, however, from the GCSE awarding bodies, and from other organisations such as the Design and Technology Association.

The Government continues to support D&T teacher recruitment through bursaries of up to £12,000.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/111", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Nick Gibb"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Bognor Regis and Littlehampton"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Nick Gibb"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-09-11", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : {"_value" : "169843"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-09-11T15:37:58.95Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "60"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-09-03", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Design and Technology: Education"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what recent assessment he has made of the level of availability of courses in design and technology in schools.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4663", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Ben Bradley"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Mansfield"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Ben Bradley"} ], "uin" : "169835"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/964136", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/964136/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
