We have continued to receive and process thousands of applications a day to the EU Settlement scheme throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 5.6 million applications received and over 5 million grants of status made by 31 May 2021. Given this success we have no plans to extend the deadline for applications to the EU Settlement Scheme.

The Home Office has invested nearly £8 million in marketing campaigns to encourage EU citizens and their family members to apply to the scheme. We recently launched a new wave of UK advertising to ensure EU citizens and their family members are aware of the deadline and know they need to apply. We are also working closely with employers, local authorities and charities to raise awareness.

In line with the Citizens’ Rights Agreements, we have made clear where a person eligible for status under the scheme has reasonable grounds for missing the 30 June 2021 deadline, they will be given a further opportunity to apply. The non-exhaustive guidance on reasonable grounds for submitting a late application was published on 1 April 2021 and includes where there are compelling practical or compassionate reasons why a person may have been unaware of the requirement to apply to the scheme by the deadline or may have failed to do so.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4311", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Williams of Trafford"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Baroness Williams of Trafford"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2021-06-21", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2021-06-21T15:34:21.267Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2021-06-07", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Immigration: EU Nationals"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what consideration they have given to extending the EU Settlement Scheme beyond 30 June.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4345", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for The Lord Bishop of Southwark"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "The Lord Bishop of Southwark"} ], "uin" : "HL819"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1175318", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1175318/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

All schools are required to teach a balanced and broadly based curriculum that promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, and prepares them for adult life.

Findings from the PISA survey (OECD, 2010) indicated that in 2009 96% of pupils in the United Kingdom were attending a school where there was a library.

In line with our approach to giving schools in England greater freedom we believe that it should be for headteachers to decide whether and how to provide a library service for their pupils. We do not, therefore, issue guidance to schools relating to the provision of school libraries. Many headteachers recognise the role libraries play in improving young people's literacy and love of reading, and ensure that suitable library facilities are provided.

Our new English curriculum makes clear the importance of reading widely and often. The Department for Education supports Booktrust, which runs the Read for My School competition which offers pupils access to a free online library of books, and The Reading Agency, which runs the Summer Reading Challenge, an annual event developed to stop children's reading levels dipping during the long holidays by providing book themed events in local libraries.

The Department has not commissioned research on the link between access to books and literacy, but know from earlier reports (Clark, C, Woodley, J and Lewis, F. [2011]. The Gift of Reading in 2011: Children and young people's access to books and attitudes towards reading.
