The UK continues to raise with the Government of Bangladesh the need for returns of Rohingya to Myanmar to be safe, voluntary and dignified, when conditions there allow.

The UK also frequently makes representations to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) about their role in the repatriations process, and works closely with them to support their remit of monitoring and assessing voluntariness of returns on both sides of the border. UNHCR are clear that conditions in Myanmar's Rakhine State are currently not conducive for repatriations. Donors have collectively raised concerns regarding UNHCR and the World Food Programme (WFP) in Myanmar providing transport to the junta. Our Permanent Representative to the UK Mission in in Geneva raised it with UNHCR HQ. We do not support UNHCR and WFPs actions, and are monitoring the situation closely.

In August 2022 the UK announced its intention to intervene in the International Court of Justice case regarding Myanmar's acts against the Rohingya. In December 2022 the UN Security Council passed a UK-led resolution on the Myanmar situation, the first in 74 years. We will continue to use our platform in international fora to improve the conditions in Myanmar, and support the Rohingya's safe, voluntary and dignified return to their homeland.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4210", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2023-05-05", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : [{"_value" : "HL7318"} , {"_value" : "HL7319"} , {"_value" : "HL7320"} ], "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2023-05-05T13:59:32.287Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "208"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2023-04-20", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Bangladesh: Rohingya"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the security implications of reports that the UNHCR and the World Food Programme removed UN insignia from UN boats that were used to transport Myanmar junta officials to Bangladesh as part of a pilot scheme that may see Rohingya refugees forcibly repatriated from Bangladesh to Myanmar.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/738", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Alton of Liverpool"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Alton of Liverpool"} ], "uin" : "HL7321"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1454225", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1454225/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

We are at the end of talks to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA). The Government supports the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights - the authoritative, voluntary international framework, which encourages businesses to conduct due diligence as part of their approaches to protecting human rights. The Government also drives transparency from our businesses to hold them to account on human rights. UK listed companies cover relevant human rights issues as part of their annual corporate reporting and our large businesses publish supply chain transparency statements according to the Modern Slavery Act, including on due diligence approaches where these are followed. In May, the Government published two policy papers which provide an update on what the Government has done to implement the UN Guiding Principles and to give an overview of how each government department contributes to this work.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4336", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Callanan"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Callanan"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2020-08-03", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2020-08-03T15:29:56.303Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "201"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2020-07-27", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Business: Human Rights"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what plans they have to ensure that all firms based in, and selling products in, the UK comply with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in conducting due diligence on the impact of the products they sell.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4719", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle"} ], "uin" : "HL7321"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/892414", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/892414/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

In the 2016 badger control operations we initiated development of a TB surveillance programme on a small sample of badger carcasses obtained from the culling operations. Tissue sampling, followed by culturing and genotyping is the most reliable method for diagnosing TB in badgers, but challenges remain with this technique when the quality of the carcasses is variable. More information on the 2016 TB surveillance can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/bovine-tb-surveillance-in-wildlife-in-england-2016-to-2017. Further work is planned to refine our methodology.

During the Randomised Badger Culling Trial, detailed post-mortems of culled badgers in the High Risk Area found that approximately one-third of badgers were infected. In addition, the APHA have a long running study of the wild badger population at Woodchester Park in Gloucestershire where 25% to 30% of the population test positive for Tuberculosis. A separate study in a different part of Gloucestershire in 2006 found that 53% of wild badgers tested positive.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4161", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Gardiner of Kimble"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Gardiner of Kimble"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-05-09", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : {"_value" : "HL7322"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-05-09T11:36:25.313Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "13"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-04-26", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Bovine Tuberculosis: Disease Control"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to test culled badgers for bovine tuberculosis.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3792", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Jones of Whitchurch"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Baroness Jones of Whitchurch"} ], "uin" : "HL7321"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/484544", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Ministry of Defence"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/484544/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) recognises the valuable skill sets of our reservists, all of whom have full access to the MOD's language schemes. We work to ensure that those reservists who already have a second language are able to use and develop that language. Any reservists employed in roles with direct requirements for language capability receive the same training as regular personnel.

The MOD maintains a pool of linguists through the Education and Training Services (Reserves), which provides additional language capability to exercises, operations and Defence Engagement tasks.
