The Government is reforming the skills system to better support people to get the skills our economy needs, which is essential to addressing labour shortages.

The Government is supporting employers in all sectors to develop the skilled workforces they need by investing £3.8 billion more in further education and skills over the Parliament, offering flexible training through Skills Bootcamps, and increased investment in apprenticeships.

In December 2022, the Government published its response to the consultation “making flexible working the default”. This committed to make changes to the Right to Request Flexible Working to boost availability, several of which are being taken forward through the Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Bill.

Additionally, the Department for Work and Pensions are reviewing workforce participation and how we can attract and retain workers, particularly older workers. This will work to address labour shortages in both the short and long term.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4949", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Johnson of Lainston"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Johnson of Lainston"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2023-03-08", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2023-03-08T18:00:43.947Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "214"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Business and Trade"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Business and Trade"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2023-02-22", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Vacancies"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask His Majesty's Government what steps they are taking to address labour shortages.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1796", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Taylor of Warwick"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Taylor of Warwick"} ], "uin" : "HL5810"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1418497", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1418497/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The findings from the asbestos in schools data collection show that the vast majority of schools that responded appear to be managing asbestos well and are fully compliant with legislation and guidance. For those that did not have fully documented plans, processes and procedures in place, the department provided immediate advice on the actions needed to address these issues and sought assurances of compliance from responsible bodies and schools.
We have also recently published updated guidance which provides information on how those legally responsible for asbestos management in schools - local authorities, schools and trusts - should manage asbestos. This includes new supplementary guidance to help duty holders understand where asbestos is commonly found, so that they can work with qualified professionals to assess and manage the risks. We also intend to further enhance scrutiny on duty holders for managing asbestos in their schools, by developing an assurance process for all duty holders to report on the management of asbestos across their respective education estates.

Alongside this, we continue to provide significant funding to schools to help those legally responsible for maintenance to keep their school buildings in a good state of repair. We are investing £10billion to maintain and improve the condition of the schools estate by 2021, and schools and responsible bodies are able to use the funding that is available to them to remove asbestos where that is appropriate.
"}
