The UK has a high degree of food security, built on supply from diverse sources; strong domestic production as well as imports through stable trade routes. We produce 60% of all the food we need, and 73% of food which we can grow or rear in the UK for all or part of the year. These figures have changed little over the last 20 years: historical production figures, including for the commodities you reference, can be found in “Agriculture in the United Kingdom”, a publication of annual statistics about agriculture in the United Kingdom at GOV.UK. UK consumers have access through international trade to food products that cannot be produced here, or at least not on a year-round basis. This supplements domestic production, and also ensures that any disruption from risks such as adverse weather or disease does not affect the UK's overall security of supply.

Domestically, the Government has committed to broadly maintain the current level of food we produce. This includes sustainably boosting production in sectors where there are post-Brexit opportunities, including horticulture and seafood, and the Agriculture Act imposes a duty on the Secretary of State to have regard to the need to encourage environmentally sustainable food production. Our farming reforms aim to support a highly productive food producing sector by supporting farmers to manage land in a way that improves food production and is more environmentally sustainable, and by paying farmers to produce public goods such as water quality, biodiversity, animal health and welfare and climate change mitigation, alongside food production.

Speaking at the recent National Farmers Union Conference in Birmingham, the Prime Minister and the Environment Secretary announced a range of measures to boost productivity and resilience in the sector, including the largest ever grant offer for farmers in the coming financial year, expected to total £427 million. This includes doubling investment in productivity schemes, bolstering schemes such as the Improving Farming Productivity grant, which provides support for farmers to invest in automation and robotics, as well as solar installations to build on-farm energy security. The Prime Minister also announced a new annual UK-wide Food Security Index, which will capture and present the data needed to monitor levels of food security, and announced plans to hold the Farm to Fork Summit annually.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/5006", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Douglas-Miller"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Douglas-Miller"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2024-03-07", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : [{"_value" : "HL2891"} , {"_value" : "HL2892"} , {"_value" : "HL2893"} , {"_value" : "HL2894"} ], "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2024-03-07T15:14:44.66Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "13"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2024-02-29", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Wheat"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask His Majesty's Government what estimate they have made of the fall in overall domestic wheat production resulting from the proposed changes in agricultural policies and payments.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/134", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Framlingham"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Framlingham"} ], "uin" : "HL2895"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1536152", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Treasury"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1536152/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

NHS England’s Sustainable Improvement Team is taking action to promote the use of Guidance on Risk Assessment and Stroke Prevention for Atrial Fibrillation (GRASP-AF) within general practitioner practices in England. This is a software audit tool developed by and trialled in the National Health Service. It greatly simplifies the process of identifying patients with Atrial Fibrillation who are not receiving the right management to help reduce their risk of stroke. As of 31 October 2016:

- 2,220 of 7,619 practices had uploaded data from the latest version of GRASP-AF;

- 152 of 209 (73%) clinical commissioning groups have at least one practice uploading data from the latest version of GRASP-AF; and

- 18 CCGs (9%) have 100% of practices uploading data.

The Government continues to implement its Strategy for UK Life Sciences, delivering its long-term programme of action to improve the wider environment for life sciences companies and overcome the barriers that allow discoveries to be translated into new treatments for patients with rare conditions.

We are making substantial investment in infrastructure for research into rare diseases and experimental medicine through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The NIHR BioResource, launched in March this year, includes a focus on rare diseases where ongoing genotyping of volunteers will speed up research into new treatments.

The NIHR Rare Diseases Translational Research Collaboration, launched alongside the UK Rare Diseases Strategy with an investment of £20 million over four years, is making good progress in developing a better understanding of the physical characteristics of rare diseases and supporting our drive for new diagnostics and treatments for patients with rare diseases.

The 100,000 Genomes Project is focusing on rare diseases and offers the strongest prospect of patient and scientific benefits and the ability to drive the transformation of the National Health Service in terms of application of genomic medicine. Furthermore, the application of whole genome sequencing may enable major new biological insights into the genetic make-up of rare diseases that will, in time, lead to new diagnostics and therapeutic innovation.

In March 2014, we announced the Early Access to Medicines Scheme to support access in the United Kingdom to promising new, unlicensed or off-label medicines in areas of unmet clinical need for patients with life threatening or seriously debilitating conditions without adequate treatment options. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has now issued two Promising Innovative Medicines Designations which is the first step of the scheme.

We are also commissioning an external review of the pathways for the development, assessment, and adoption of innovative medicines and medical technology. This review will consider how to speed up access for NHS patients to cost-effective new diagnostics, medicines and devices.
