The Government funders of health research do not generally set a target research spend for specific areas. The level of research spending in a particular area is driven by a number of factors, including the scientific potential and the number and scale of successful applications. In 2015-16, the topic-specific spend on mental health research by the National Institute for Health Research was second only to that spent on cancer.

The Department has been collaborating with the mental health community to develop a ten year framework for research on mental health, which is expected to be published by the end of 2017. It is recognised that there is a need to encourage researchers in other disciplines to apply their research skills in the mental health field to help drive forward new approaches.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4545", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord O'Shaughnessy"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord O'Shaughnessy"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2017-11-01", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : {"_value" : "HL2174"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2017-11-01T16:06:19.963Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "17"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Health"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Health"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2017-10-18", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Mental Illness: Research"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government when they anticipate that mental health research funding will achieve parity with funding for physical health research.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3335", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Brooke of Alverthorpe"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Brooke of Alverthorpe"} ], "uin" : "HL2175"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/598146", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/598146/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

On 13 October the Supreme Court in Pakistan postponed Ms Asia Bibi's appeal hearing indefinitely. I remain concerned about Ms Bibi and continue to follow developments in her case closely. We raise regularly our concerns about misuse of the blasphemy laws with the Pakistani Government, and continue to urge Pakistan to adhere to its international obligations and uphold the rule of law. During his visit to Pakistan in March, the former Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), made clear our concerns about minority communities and misuse of the blasphemy laws.

The UK supported the EU statement of October 2014 following the decision of the Lahore High Court to uphold the conviction of Ms Bibi. We will continue to work with our EU and other international partners to ensure our views are made clear to the Pakistani authorities.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3474", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Anelay of St Johns"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Baroness Anelay of St Johns"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2016-10-20", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2016-10-20T14:15:14.907Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "16"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2016-10-10", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Asia Bibi"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty’s Government what representations they have made to the government of Pakistan about the imminent appeal hearing for Asia Bibi at the Pakistani Supreme Court on the charge of blasphemy.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4308", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for The Lord Bishop of St Albans"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "The Lord Bishop of St Albans"} ], "uin" : "HL2175"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/418381", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/418381/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

UK Overseas Territory (OT) Governments are constitutionally responsible for the protection and conservation of their natural environments. Through the UK Government-funded Overseas Territory Environment and Climate Fund (Darwin Plus) we have committed approximately £5.2 million since 2012 to supporting environment projects in the OTs. A number of these have helped to conserve penguins.

Darwin Plus has funded projects to create a regional database of penguin tracking data, population analysis and modelling and to deploy autonomous camera units to monitor penguin populations in the British Antarctic Territory and South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands.

In addition, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office recently funded a project led by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to carry out the first ever stocktake of species in the OTs. The study, completed between January 2013 and March 2014, with further work in 2015, brought together all known species records and conservation assessments. Although only a few OTs have permanent penguin populations, it found that the islands of the OTs include more penguins than any other nation on earth, holding an estimated 36% of the world’s population of southern rockhopper penguins and 34% of gentoo penguins.
