The School Food Plan (July 2013), has helped to bring about improvements in the provision of school food. We have since launched the new school food standards in January 2015 and they have been widely welcomed by schools. The standards severely restrict foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar, as well as low quality reformed or reconstituted foods. They ban crisps, confectionery and high-sugar drinks. The standards apply to all food and drink provided to pupils in schools.

The Government supports measures to ensure that children eat a healthy, nutritious meal at lunchtime. This is why we set out, through legislation, the minimum standards for food provided by schools. Governing boards are responsible for their school meals policies, including packed lunches and implementing these effectively. We have no current plans to legislate for packed lunches.

However, we want to make it easier for parents to feel confident that they are preparing balanced, nutritious lunches for their children. Further information such as recipes, tips and swap suggestions that are practical and affordable for parents are available on the Change4Life website at: https://www.nhs.uk/change4life-beta/healthier-lunchboxes.
