Since the London Ministerial summit on Nigeria in June 2014, the Ministry of Defence has deployed 16 short term training teams to Nigeria to assist the Nigerian armed forces. Currently nine UK military personnel are permanently deployed within the British High Commission, in the Defence Section and the British Military Advisory and Training Team. We also have a small team deployed within the international Intelligence fusion cell in Abuja working alongside Nigerian and international partners.

The UK has spent £39 million since 2002 supporting the reform on Nigeria’s power system. Of this around £7 million has been spent directly on support to privatisation and around £14 million on market and regulatory reform.

Support has been provided through two phases of the Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (NIAF) programme. The first phase ran from 2007 to the end of 2011 (and spent £15.5 million on the power sector, of which £4 million was on privatisation). The second phase started at the end of 2011 and runs to December 2016 (and has spent £23.5 million on the power sector to date, £3 million on privatisation). DFID support has helped more than double the power supply.

DFID is supporting the 2015 Nigerian elections (now scheduled for 28 March and 11 April) through a £35m programme called Deepening Democracy in Nigeria 2 (DDiN2) from 2014 – 2018. It works across the electoral cycle and strengthens broader democratic governance in Nigeria. It is seeking to improve management, security and independent observation of the 2015 Presidential, National Assembly and gubernatorial elections. It also seeks to increase engagement by the electorate in Nigerian political processes, and in particular by women, youth and people with disabilities.

DFID also works closely with the FCO, EU and US in particular to have a joined up approach to elections support.

Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond), said on 8 February, the Nigerian people have the right to credible, peaceful and transparent elections.
