The Scotland Office takes issues raised by businesses very seriously indeed. That is why we have listened to the concerns of businesses, particularly small businesses, in relation to the Scottish Government's Deposit Return Scheme.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) supports companies in Scotland and the rest of the UK to trade globally through initiatives including the GREAT campaign, Export Campaigns, the Tradeshow Access Programme and financial support offered by UK Export Finance. The Department’s Export Strategy sets out how we will put in place the right practical, promotional and financial support to help businesses to grow sustainably by exporting. This also includes support from dedicated food and drink teams working for Her Majesty's Trade Commissioners across Asia Pacific, Latin America and Africa.

DIT also supports the Government’s work to gain overseas market access for produce from the UK. In China, we have secured market access for seed potatoes, a huge boon to the Scottish farming industry which delivers about 70% of the UK seed potato export volume, alongside access for beef, where UK exports are expected to be worth £250m over 5 years.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/1482", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Graham Stuart"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Beverley and Holderness"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Graham Stuart"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2019-02-01", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2019-02-01T15:55:25.537Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "202"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "International Trade"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "International Trade"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2019-01-24", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Food: Scotland"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for International Trade, what steps his Department is taking to increase food and drink exports from Scotland to (a) Asia (b) South America and (c) Africa.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4608", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for John Lamont"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "John Lamont"} ], "uin" : "212432"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1017297", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1017297/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The UK Government recognises the economic and cultural importance of geographical indications (GIs) to Scotland.

The UK will establish its own GI schemes at the point at which EU law ceases to apply in the UK. These will provide a clear and simple set of rules on GIs. The new UK framework will comply with and go beyond the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). This will ensure that UK GIs enjoy continued protection in the UK after we leave the EU.

Under the Withdrawal Agreement, all current UK GIs will continue to be protected in the EU during the implementation period. As part of our work preparing to make a success of our departure from the European Union we are carrying out a full suite of analysis as you would expect a responsible Government to do. This means looking at 58 sectors as well as cross-cutting regulatory, economic and social issues to help inform our negotiation positions.

We have discussed sectoral and other economic analysis with the Scottish Government and the other devolved administrations frequently since the referendum, including at several rounds of JMC (EN) meetings. There has also been extensive engagement with the DAs outside of the JMC process – including meetings at both ministerial and official level.

The Government’s Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health, Food and Drink Manufacturing and Fisheries sectoral reports set out a description of the sectors, the current EU regulatory regime, existing frameworks for how trade is facilitated between countries in these sectors and sector views. After we leave the EU we will put in place an immigration system which works in the best interests of the whole of the UK. Crucial to the development of this new immigration system will be the views from a range of businesses, including those in agriculture and the food and drink industries.
