The Department for Work and Pensions will publish an employer-led national strategy to set out the direction of the fuller working lives agenda early next year. I will be working closely with Ministerial colleagues on this strategy.<\/p>
The number of older women (50-64) in work is at a record high, but we are committed to maximising women\u2019s economic contribution at every stage of their career. Government recently announced the appointment of Business in the Community Age at Work leadership team as Business Champion for Older Workers. This team will spearhead Government\u2019s work to support employers hiring and re-training older workers.<\/p>
Working through the Women\u2019s Business Council, we are focussing on removing barriers for older women workers, supporting them to improve their skills and return to the workplace. Barclays, a Council member company, recently launched a toolkit to extend its apprenticeship programmes to older workers, allowing them to improve their skills whilst earning.<\/p>
We know that women still shoulder the burden of caring for both children and elderly relatives and so the £1.9m Carers in Employment project is exploring ways to support carers to maintain their paid employment alongside their caring responsibilities.<\/p>

DWP recognises and welcomes the valuable knowledge and skills that older workers bring to the work place. There are now more older people in employment than ever before, 9.6 million 50+ workers in the UK \u2013 an increase of over a million (1.3 million) over the last 5 years.<\/p>

As well as access to the full Jobcentre Plus offer of personalised support, we introduced Older Claimant Champions in Jobcentre Plus, and have run two yearlong trials from April 2015 to test how we support older people where age is a barrier to them finding work. The trials are being evaluated and initial results will be available in autumn 2016.<\/p>

DWP will continue to challenge people\u2019s outdated perception about older workers, and build on the work started by Business Champion for Older Workers to actively promote the business case and benefits of employing older workers, seeking to engage and influence both strategically and in terms of practical advice.<\/p>
Jobcentre Plus continues to use a range of innovative approaches to help claimants back to work. Work Coaches have the flexibility to offer all claimants, including older people, a comprehensive menu of help which includes skills provision and job search support.<\/p>
