The number of employees in Cabinet Office from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019 who were
absent for stress related reasons was 48. This represented 0.64% of the total workforce<\/p>
The proportion of sickness absence related to stress related reasons was 11.35% of the
overall sickness absence for the department for the same time period<\/p>
The estimated cost to the department from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019 for employees
taking stress related reasons, is estimated at £199,634<\/p>

The Cabinet Office wellbeing action plan enables support for all staff\u2019s health and
wellbeing. Key initiatives include: running leadership wellbeing training for all Senior Civil
Servants, updating line manager training to ensure wellbeing is included in all
conversations, embedding wellbeing into the Senior Civil Service leadership objective and
including wellbeing in performance management monthly conversation tools<\/p>
There are a number of support services available in Cabinet Office that provide support or
advice to all employees. These include the Cabinet Office alumni network, the Cabinet
Office listening service and the employee assistance programme.<\/p>"}

The Civil Service recognises that good workforce health and wellbeing is fundamental to delivering effective public services. We support people so that they can remain at work where possible and to return as soon as they are ready following sickness absence.<\/p>
<\/p>
The Cabinet Office holds information on the amount of sick leave taken and the reasons for sick leave taken for (a) all of the civil servants in the Department who have recorded absence due to sickness. This includes sick leave for mental health issues that in each of the calendar years 2016 and 2017 amounted to less than 1 day of absence per staff year.<\/p>
<\/p>
Statistics on sick leave taken by staff in the Cabinet Office are published quarterly in arrears at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cabinet-office-absence-data<\/a> .<\/p> <\/p> <\/p> The Cabinet Office collates data on sickness absence from (b) civil service departments and agencies on a quarterly basis in order to understand variation across departments and overall civil service trends. The data can be broken down across a range of types of illness including mental ill-health. The latest data held covers the years leading up to and including Q2 2017 (July 2016 - June 2017). In this period there was an average of 1.7 days per staff year of absence due to mental ill health across the civil service. In the previous year (July 2015-June 2016) there was an average of 1.8 days per staff year of absence due to mental ill health across the civil service.<\/p> <\/p>

We offer a 24 hour counselling support helpline through our Employee Assistance Programme provider and advocate early referral to our occupational health service where appropriate, for advice on a number of conditions including mental health. The Cabinet Office also has a pool of trained Mental Health First Aiders who provide face to face support and signposting to professional services.<\/p>"}
