Universal Support will deliver a national programme using the proven supported employment approach. A number of localities already have experience of delivering this approach, for example, through the Local Supported Employment Programme and through Individual Placement and Support in Primary Care.

Through Universal Support, more disabled people will have access to the this ‘Place, Train and Maintain’ approach to employment support. This means placing participants in work at the earliest opportunity, training them to do their job effectively and providing ongoing support to sustain them in work. That job placement will be based on a good understanding of what the participant wants to achieve, and the employer and participant receiving support through the recruitment process and into the workplace to sustain that employment.

Support will be tailored to the participant’s needs and could include help for the individual to address issues like debt, manage their health condition and help employers to put in place job shaping or other adjustments to accommodate the individual’s needs. We will work with providers and local areas to ensure the appropriate support is available to participants.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4369", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Tom Pursglove"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Corby"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Tom Pursglove"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2023-04-25", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2023-04-25T10:11:01.893Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "29"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Work and Pensions"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Work and Pensions"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2023-04-20", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Universal Support"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, pursuant to the Answer of 21 March 2023 to Question 167120 on Employment Schemes: Disability, what new specialist support will be available to disabled jobseekers through the universal support programme.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4244", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Jonathan Ashworth"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Leicester South"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Jonathan Ashworth"} ], "uin" : "181969"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1612760", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Work and Pensions"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1612760/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
