The Serious Violence Strategy sets out the importance of a multi-agency approach to tackling serious violence which involves a range of partners and agencies. The strategy places a strong emphasis on early intervention and tackling the root causes of the problem to prevent young people from being drawn into violence in the first place.

Voluntary sector organisations are essential in helping the Government to deliver on our commitments in the strategy. We have provided support to a number of voluntary sector partners to help tackle serious violence, including through the £1.5m we made available for grassroots projects through our anti-knife crime Community Fund in 2018/19 and making available £22m through our Early Intervention Youth Fund through which we have already invested £17.7m in 29 projects across England and Wales. We will be evaluating the projects and sharing information and learning across all areas to assist voluntary and community sector organisations to continue to provide the best support to young people to tackle serious violence.

In addition, the £200m Youth Endowment Fund, announced by the Home Secretary last October, will deliver a ten-year programme of grants that will enable interventions targeted at children and young people who are at most risk. It will act as a centre of expertise; finding out which approaches are most effective; generating, disseminating and promoting new knowledge and practice to transform local and national responses.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4399", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Victoria Atkins"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Louth and Horncastle"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Victoria Atkins"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2019-04-24", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2019-04-24T12:33:38.957Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Home Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2019-04-08", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Violence: Voluntary Organisations"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment he has made of the (a) ability and (b) capacity of voluntary sector organisations to assist (i) the police and (ii) other authorities in tackling serious violence.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4667", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Mike Amesbury"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Weaver Vale"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Mike Amesbury"} ], "uin" : "242242"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1109341", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1109341/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

Academy trusts are free to set their own salaries for all teaching, support and senior management roles. However, we expect these to be justifiable and to reflect accurately the role. Trusts are not obliged to follow the statutory system set out in the independent School Teachers’ Review Body; although trusts can choose to follow the terms of the school teachers' pay and conditions document in relation to teachers and school leaders and local government employee designation for non-teaching staff.

The government is clear about expectations on pay for all schools, and not just academy trusts. Where trusts are paying high salaries, the government will publicly challenge trusts and boards to justify themselves. We have been doing so for more than a year; and will continue to do so throughout 2019. The latest published data confirms that only 4% of trusts pay one or more salary over £150,000 and the mean average salary for an academy secondary headteacher is £92,400 and £88,800 for a maintained secondary headteacher. In addition, a recent survey of 1000 academies[1] found that the salary for executive leaders declined in 5 of the 6 categories based on pupil numbers in the trust.
