We have not made a specific assessment of the effect of the change in the level of funding for public health on the COVID-19 outbreak. At the time of the Spending Round 2019, the Government announced that the public health grant would rise in real terms, enabling local government to continue to invest in the services it funds. The Government, NHS England, Public Health England and the Care Quality Commission co-published updated guidance for the care sector on 2 April 2020. \u2018Admission and Care of Residents during COVID-19 Incident in a Care Home\u2019 is the current guidance for the care sector and is live on gov.uk. This guidance sets out infection control and cohorting advice to care homes, which providers should follow to ensure that they have the confidence to receive and support residents.<\/p>

At the start of the COVID-19 outbreak in March there were more than 8,000 mechanical ventilators in hospitals across the United Kingdom. These were mainly procured by National Health Service trusts through NHS Supply Chain which manages a framework contract with a number of manufacturers for the supply of mechanical ventilators into the NHS.<\/p>
In March the decision was taken to move to a centralised model of procurement for the whole of the UK. All suppliers of non-invasive and invasive (mechanical) ventilators on the NHS Supply Chain framework were approached between 3 and 10 March, with a view to purchase any available ventilators. So far over 1,000 mechanical ventilators have been procured and made available to the NHS in the UK through this route, with thousands more on order and due to arrive in coming weeks.<\/p>
These are in addition to ventilators made available from the private sector and those manufactured under the PM\u2019s Ventilator Challenge programme. Including these, the NHS in the UK now has around 10,900 mechanical ventilators available for it to use in total.<\/p>

Expert doctors in England have identified specific medical conditions that, based on what we know about the virus so far, place someone at greatest risk of severe illness from COVID-19. These are signed off by the UK Senior Clinicians Group (including four United Kingdom Chief Medical Officers and clinical leadership at NHS England, NHS Digital, and Public Health England).<\/p>
Individuals who have been identified with one of these medical conditions are classed as being clinically extremely vulnerable and are advised to shield to protect themselves. Shielding involves staying at home at all times and avoiding all face to face contact for a period of at least 12 weeks.<\/p>
Pulmonary fibrosis is an interstitial lung disease. Patients with interstitial lung disease (which includes pulmonary fibrosis) have been identified as clinically extremely vulnerable.<\/p>
