Current UK legislation requires nuclear power plants in England to limit their radioactive gaseous emissions to within safe levels. Similar legislation is in place in Wales and Scotland. The UK and territorial environmental agencies are responsible for implementing this legislation, which includes setting specific emissions limits and monitoring and reporting requirements for individual plants.<\/p>
The regulators have powers to vary these requirements, including the scope and frequency of emissions monitoring and reporting, as they deem necessary for the purpose of verifying each plant\u2019s compliance with its permitted emissions limits. The regulators also have powers to take robust enforcement action in respect of any breach in compliance.<\/p>

A number of countries are calling for a commitment to limit global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees, most notably through a new group called the Climate Vulnerables Forum. The Government supports the 'below 2 degrees\u2019 objective, and recognises the need to keep the temperature rise as low as possible below 2C, including the possibility of staying below 1.5 degrees. We are pushing for the highest possible mitigation ambition in the new agreement.<\/p>

The UK and India have a strong collaboration in clean energy and this was reflected in our recent joint statement on energy and climate change released during PM Modi\u2019s visit to the UK (12-14 November):<\/p>

There is an agreed industry standard methodology in place for the Industry to measure and record the UK content in each offshore wind farm. The industry publishes the anonymised and consolidated results to allow the sector and the public to track the sector\u2019s progress towards fulfilling their vision.<\/p> A report on 'The size and performance of the UK low carbon economy\u2019 published by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills contains estimates of turnover, gross value added (GVA), and the number of jobs supported by the low carbon sectors across the UK.1<\/sup><\/p> There are 269,800 people employed across all low carbon sectors in the UK, including generation of electricity, energy efficiency, vehicles, low carbon heat, and production of fuels.<\/p> There were 68,100 people employed collectively in the renewable energy sector supply chains in 2013.
