The Government Equalities Office (GEO) continues to address the important issue of body image as part of its work to support young people’s media literacy, resilience, healthy relationships and healthy self-image. In 2015, the GEO funded the PSHE Association to develop key standards on teaching about body image in schools, and this resource has been used and valued by many teachers. It has been updated and is still available on the PSHE Association website.

The GEO also funded Media Smart, the advertising industry’s educational charity, to develop film-based resources for pupils in Key Stage 2 on the issue of body image in advertising. This resource was launched in 2016 and continues to be used and valued within schools.

The GEO has also addressed concerns about the very low weight of some fashion models. The previous Minister for Women and Equalities, Caroline Dinenage, hosted a roundtable for fashion models to hear their experience and concerns, and met with the British Fashion Council (BFC) to discuss what could be done to support models’ health and wellbeing. As a consequence, the BFC developed improved advice for models and agencies which is available on its website. The BFC also runs The Model Zone as a part of London Fashion Week, to support models’ wellbeing.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4270", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Nash"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Nash"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2017-07-18", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2017-07-18T14:26:17.01Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "60"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Education"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2017-07-04", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "Her Majesty's Government whether the Government Equalities Office’s Body Confidence Campaign has undertaken any activities since its 2015 progress report; and whether any future activities are planned.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4286", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Mendelsohn"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Mendelsohn"} ], "uin" : "HL451"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/748007", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Education"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/748007/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The process required to sell part of the English student loan book under the Sale of Student Loans Act (2008) was launched in February this year. An update will be provided in due course.

A sale on the basis set out in February would not represent a step towards privatisation of the provision or administration of student loans. The position of people with student loans would not be affected as a result of such a sale.

The proposed sale comprised the rights to future repayments and would not involve alteration of the mechanisms or terms of repayment.

We are pleased the Supreme Court unanimously agreed with our position that no child should be taken out of school without good reason. We want to ensure young people have the skills they need to do the well-paid, high-skilled jobs of the future. That is why we are investing money into improving skills provision and giving young people real choice, including an additional £500 million per year investment in England’s technical education system.

We want to improve the quality and coverage of careers advice for young people in schools and colleges. We will set out our plans in a comprehensive careers strategy later this year.

We set up the Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) in 2014 to connect employers with schools and colleges and improve opportunities for young people to learn about work. The CEC has made good progress in delivering its programmes.
