The department believes it vital that young people are taught about important matters such as environmental sustainability in school.

Topics relating to the environment are covered in the National Curriculum in the science and geography curricula and in GCSEs. In both subjects, at key stages 1 and 2, pupils are taught about seasons and habitats, as well as covering climate zones and how environments can change. Secondary geography includes study of the climate, how human and physical processes interact to influence and change landscapes, environments and the climate. In science key stages 3 and 4 and at GCSE, pupils study climate and ecosystems including how human interaction with ecosystems impacts on biodiversity. We have also introduced a new environmental science A level which became available to pupils in 2017. This will enable pupils to study topics that will support their understanding of climate change and how it can be tackled.

Pupils also cover content on the environment in citizenship education which has been a compulsory subject in maintained schools since 2002. Pupils are taught what improves and harms the environment, and how economic choices affect sustainability. Teachers have the flexibility and freedom to determine how they deliver the content in the way that best meets the needs of their pupils and can choose to cover particular topics in greater depth if they wish.

We made clear our deep concerns about reports that the new Israeli Government coalition has reached an agreement which may pave the way for annexation of parts of the West Bank at the UN Security Council remote meeting on the Middle East Peace Process on 23 April. The UK position is clear: any unilateral moves towards annexation of parts of the West Bank by Israel would be damaging to efforts to restart peace negotiations and contrary to international law. The Prime Minister reiterated our opposition to the unilateral annexation of territory during a call with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, on 6 February.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/4210", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2020-05-13", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2020-05-13T13:58:37.427Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "16"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Foreign and Commonwealth Office"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2020-04-28", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Israeli Settlements"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what representations they have made to the government of Israel about its recent proposed annexation of territory in the West Bank.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/627", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Campbell of Pittenweem"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Campbell of Pittenweem"} ], "uin" : "HL3463"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/792939", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Work and Pensions"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/792939/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The Universal Credit full service is designed around user needs to be as accessible as possible. Those claimants who lack capability to make their claim via the on-line self-service, or are not able to travel, can call the Universal Credit Service Centre on 0345 600 0723. The UC Service Centre will establish the best means of support available, which could be signposting to Universal Support delivered locally, the local Jobcentre or telephony support. In exceptional circumstances, a home visit can be arranged to support a claimant in making their initial claim and completing any other administrative tasks required to ensure the claimant receives the correct payment.

Should a claimant present at the local Jobcentre, there are staff available to support them to make their UC claim on-line and navigate their on-line account. They aim to provide this there and then. If a disabled claimant or claimant with complex needs does not have all of the information available to complete the on-line claim, or if all the staff are helping other claimants, they will be given a date and time to return.

If a disabled or claimant with complex needs or their advocate phone the Jobcentre, they will provide an appointment with either the Local Authority or the Jobcentre to receive support.

In addition, when a claimant is incapable of managing their own affairs the Secretary of State may appoint a person to act on the claimant’s behalf in all dealings with the Department.
