It remains a long-standing policy of the United Kingdom to oppose the death penalty in all circumstances as a matter of principle. We have regularly made our position clear to the Egyptian Government.<\/p>
We have particular concerns in Egypt regarding Article 122 of the Child Law in Egypt and cases involving the death penalty and juveniles. Our Embassy in Cairo has raised our concerns with the Egyptian authorities and asked them to take action to release political detainees who remain imprisoned and to review mass judicial decisions.<\/p>
I raised our concerns in my interim Autumn Statement on Human Rights Priority Countries on 22nd October 2019. The British Government is seriously concerned by the continued demolition of Palestinian property by the Israeli authorities. The practice causes unnecessary suffering to ordinary Palestinians; calls into question Israel\u2019s commitment to a viable two-state solution and, in all but the most exceptional of cases are contrary to International Humanitarian Law. Officials from our Embassy in Tel Aviv have repeatedly raised our concerns about demolitions with the Israeli authorities. Most recently, the UK\u2019s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN raised this issue at the UN Security Council briefing on the Middle East on 18 December 2019.
