The hon. Member for Sheffield, Brightside and Hillsborough, may wish to be aware that on 14 December, we published dedicated advice on sexual violence and sexual harassment between children in schools and colleges. This explains what sexual violence and sexual harassment is, how to minimise the risks of it happening and how to manage reports of incidents.<\/p>
At the same time as publishing the advice, we launched a consultation on proposals to update the department\u2019s statutory safeguarding guidance, \u2018Keeping Children Safe in Education\u2019, from September 2018. The consultation closes on 22 February 2018.<\/p>
As part of the consultation we are seeking views both on the content of the advice on sexual harassment and sexual violence and on the extent to which it should be reflected in the statutory guidance.<\/p>
We plan to publish the revised \u2018Keeping Children Safe in Education\u2019 guidance, for information, early in the summer term 2018. On 14 December 2017 the department published advice for schools on how to prevent and respond to reports of sexual violence and sexual harassment between children (available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sexual-violence-and-sexual-harassment-between-children-in-schools-and-colleges<\/a>.)<\/p> Keeping Children Safe in Education is statutory guidance that all schools must have regard to when carrying out their duties to safeguard and promote the welfare of children (available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/keeping-children-safe-in-education--2<\/a>).<\/p> KCSIE sets out that all staff should receive safeguarding and child protection training at induction and that training should be regularly updated. All schools should have an effective child protection policy. The policy should include procedures to minimise the risk of peer on peer abuse, set out how allegations will be investigated and dealt with, be clear abuse should never be passed off as \u201cbanter\u201d and set out how victims of peer on peer abuse will be supported.<\/p>
