The Government has been working with the automotive sector to understand the challenges and opportunities that may arise in the coming months and years, and will continue to do so as the negotiations get underway.

The majority of safety standards applied to the automotive sector are agreed at an international level in the form of UNECE regulations and the UK will continue to accept products complying with these regulations after it exits the EU.

With regards to the EU27, under the Repeal Bill the Government will ensure that UK regulations and standards for motor vehicles are fully aligned with those in the EU on the day we leave the EU. We want people across the country to have the opportunity to make the move to electric vehicles (EVs). The vast majority of EV drivers choose to charge their cars at home, overnight, or increasingly at the workplace, but public charging is still important.

Higher powered charging technology (above 150 kW) has been developed in response to increasing sizes of car batteries, and although no EV models that can currently charge at that rate are commercially available in the UK, they are expected to be later this year. Some vehicle manufacturers, such as the Ionity group, are already investing in order to make these high powered chargers publicly available.

The UK already has more than 900 rapid chargepoints, one of the largest networks in Europe. The Government has put in place a range of grant schemes to support the installation of charging infrastructure - on-street, off-street and at workplaces that are available in any urban or rural areas UK-wide. In addition, under the Government’s Go Ultra Low City Scheme £22.9m has been allocated to support the installation of infrastructure currently being procured and installed in several UK cities and surrounding rural areas. One of these cities, York, is currently exploring the installation of high-powered charging.

At Autumn Budget 2017, the Chancellor announced a new £400m electric vehicle Charging Infrastructure Investment Fund. This funding could include supporting rapid chargers in both rural and urban areas, and more detail on how the Fund will be administered will be published in due course. The Government is also taking powers through the Automated and Electric Vehicle Bill to ensure the roll-out of electric vehicle infrastructure at key locations like motorway service areas and large fuel stations, which again could involve both urban and more rural areas.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3991", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Jesse Norman"} } , "answeringMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Hereford and South Herefordshire"} , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Jesse Norman"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-03-02", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-03-02T14:26:39.87Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "27"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Transport"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-02-23", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Electric Vehicles: Charging Points"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "1"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25259", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Commons"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps his Department is taking to roll-out superfast charging infrastructure to rural areas.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3939", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Andrew Percy"} } , "tablingMemberConstituency" : {"_value" : "Brigg and Goole"} , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Andrew Percy"} ], "uin" : "129445"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/847800", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Transport"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/847800/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "

The Transport Minister for Aviation met with local authorities from the Heathrow area on 1st November 2016. This was to discuss the process of publicising the proposed Airport National Policy Statement. The Lakeside Energy from Waste plant was raised and the local authorities in attendance were advised we would welcome views as part of any future consultation. No Ministerial meetings have been held between Ministers and local authorities to discuss the potential relocation of Lakeside Energy from Waste facility.

On the 17th February 2017 officials from the Department met with representatives of Lakeside Energy from Waste facility at their request, together with other interested commercial stakeholders to give an overview of the National Policy Statement process.

The Department for Transport has made no formal estimate of the cost to (a) Government and (b) local authorities of filling in potholes in England in 2016 or 2017. The Department for Transport has no current plans to estimate the cost to the public purse of repairing all potholes on public roads, although others have made informal estimates of their own.
