The UK Government is appalled by the Government of Uganda's decision to sign the anti-homosexuality bill into law on 28 May 2023, in particular the introduction of the death penalty for so-called 'aggravated homosexuality'. In his meetings with the Ugandan Foreign Minister on 4 May 2023 and the Ugandan High Commissioner on 1 June 2023, the Minister of State for Africa and Development [Andrew Mitchell] denounced the Act and the appalling effects it will have on LGBT+ people in Uganda. The Prime Minister has also spoken with the Foreign Minister, as has the Foreign Secretary with the High Commissioner. The FCDO is committed to ensuring 40 million more girls are in school and learning by 2026. Currently there is a global education crisis with 244 million children out of school. We therefore make significant investments through global funds to support delivery at scale to reach the 40 million target. We pledged £430 million to the Global Partnership for Education in 2021, and £80 million to Education Cannot Wait in February 2023. At COP26, the UK strongly supported the establishment of a 'Glasgow Dialogue on Loss and Damage' to discuss the arrangements for the funding of activities to avert, minimise and address loss and damage. The Santiago Network (a platform for catalysing technical assistance on loss and damage for developing countries) was also progressed through agreement on functions and funding. The UK actively participates in the Glasgow Dialogue and Santiago Network and looks forward to engaging on Loss and Damage at COP27, to build upon the progress made in Glasgow.<\/p>

The UK Government continuously monitors political, economic and environmental developments in South Sudan, including the possibility of dredging in the Sudd wetlands. UK Government officials have raised the Sudd wetlands with the Government of South Sudan where appropriate, most recently at a meeting between the UK's Special Representative for Sudan and South Sudan and the South Sudanese Ambassador to the UK on 22 June.<\/p>

The Government has made improving water quality a priority. The Environment Act has placed our ambition on a statutory footing, setting a duty for water companies to achieve a progressive reduction in the adverse impacts of discharges from storm overflows. Our Storm Overflow Discharge Reduction Plan will be published in September and will set out the targets water companies will be required to meet to achieve this.<\/p>

Currently, no assessment has been undertaken on sewage discharges on animal farming more generally. Pharmaceuticals may enter the environment during the manufacture and disposal of pharmaceutical products, or as they pass through humans and animals into wastewater treatment networks or the wider environment.<\/p>

There is much to be done to improve our understanding of the impacts that pharmaceuticals have on the environment, but some are known to cause adverse impacts on aquatic life and contribute to the spread of antimicrobial resistance.<\/p>

Whilst the Environment Agency (EA) does not have environmental monitoring in place specifically targeting metal nanoparticles, it is keeping a watching brief on innovative monitoring approaches and environmental effects. Although the science associated with environmental analysis for nanoparticles (and their associated effects) is in development, the EA has considered a number of nanoparticles through its Prioritisation and Early Warning System (PEWS).
