Data on the total spent by Government on providing medical treatment, social support and financial assistance for people with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s or other related conditions is not collected or reported centrally.

In the Challenge on Dementia 2020, the Government committed to double spending on dementia research to £300 million between 2015 and 2020. This is equivalent to around £60 million per annum and we are on track to meet this pledge. In 2017/18 the Government spent £82.5 million on dementia research. Much of the investment is for research to better understand the nature of dementia, to inform development of future treatments and find ways to prevent the onset of the condition.

The following table shows Government spending on dementia research through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Medical Research Council (MRC) and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

Dementia remains a global challenge that we are committed to tackle in partnership with governments and organisations across the world.

Following the first G8 Dementia Summit in December 2013, the United Kingdom has been leading international efforts to fight dementia and working with international partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Dementia Council and countries within the G7, European Union and beyond, to that end. In May 2017, the Government committed to support the WHO Global Plan of Action on Dementia, during the World Health Assembly.

The UK is also part of ‘Act on Dementia’, a three-year European Union Joint Action to promote collaboration between members. As part of this work, the UK is leading a work package to support the development of dementia friendly communities across Europe.

The Government will consider the Special Rapporteur’s findings carefully. Although it disagrees with the conclusion of this interim report, the Government has noted that the report welcomes the simplification of the benefits system brought in by Universal Credit and the recent Budget announcements to help tackle in-work poverty.

The 14 million people in poverty figure used by the Special Rapporteur was taken from the Social Metrics Commission report “A new measure of poverty for the UK”.

We welcome the work that the Social Metrics Commission has done. Measuring poverty is complex, and this report offers further insight into that complexity. We are engaging with the Social Metrics Commission, who acknowledge that further work needs to be done (particularly around data availability and quality). We will carefully consider their recommendations and the detail behind the methodology they have employed when this has been made available.

The finding relating to the number of people in destitution is a misinterpretation of the key finding from a report published by the Joseph Rowntree Trust on 7 June, 2018: “Destitution in the UK, 2018”. This report found that 1.5 million people in the UK had been destitute at some point during 2017 and also noted that this was a reduction of 25 per cent compared with 2015.

Under this Government, income inequality has fallen and remains lower than in 2010; the number of children in workless households is at a record low; and there are 1 million fewer people in absolute poverty (before housing costs) compared with 2010, including 300,000 children.
"} , "answeringMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3349", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Baroness Buscombe"} } , "answeringMemberPrinted" : {"_value" : "Baroness Buscombe"} , "dateOfAnswer" : {"_value" : "2018-11-28", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "groupedQuestionUIN" : [{"_value" : "HL11546"} , {"_value" : "HL11547"} ], "isMinisterialCorrection" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "questionFirstAnswered" : [{"_value" : "2018-11-28T11:45:12.607Z", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} ]} , "answeringDeptId" : {"_value" : "29"} , "answeringDeptShortName" : {"_value" : "Work and Pensions"} , "answeringDeptSortName" : {"_value" : "Work and Pensions"} , "date" : {"_value" : "2018-11-19", "_datatype" : "dateTime"} , "hansardHeading" : {"_value" : "Poverty"} , "houseId" : {"_value" : "2"} , "legislature" : [{"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/terms/25277", "prefLabel" : {"_value" : "House of Lords"} } ], "questionText" : "To ask Her Majesty's Government what plans they have to publish a response to the Statement on the Visit to the UK by the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, published on 16 November.", "registeredInterest" : {"_value" : "false", "_datatype" : "boolean"} , "tablingMember" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/members/3504", "label" : {"_value" : "Biography information for Lord Bassam of Brighton"} } , "tablingMemberPrinted" : [{"_value" : "Lord Bassam of Brighton"} ], "uin" : "HL11545"} , {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1010099", "AnsweringBody" : [{"_value" : "Department for Work and Pensions"} ], "answer" : {"_about" : "http://data.parliament.uk/resources/1010099/answer", "answerText" : {"_value" : "
