We appreciate the globally recognised expertise of these charities, and the substantial contributions they make to our world-leading life sciences sector.<\/p>
BEIS and the Department of Health and Social Care regularly discuss the impacts of Covid-19 on charity-funded research with the Association of Medical Research Charities. We are continuing to engage with them and receive intelligence on the impacts facing the sector, such as the challenges facing fundraising activities.<\/p>
The Government already provides significant funding to charities\u2019 research, for example through Research England\u2019s Quality Related (QR) charity support funding. This year charity QR will amount to £204m, to support charity funded research in universities in England and equivalent support is provided in Scotland through devolved funding arrangements. Government has demonstrated its ambitions for research by committing £14.6bn to R&D next year.\u202f This funding will support the life sciences sector within which Medical Research Charities operate alongside other research areas.<\/p>"}

The challenging financial situation we face due to the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in a temporary reduction in the UK\u2019s aid spending target from 0.7% of GNI to 0.5%. This means making difficult decisions when it comes to prioritising how we spend aid money to deliver the most impactful outcomes.<\/p>

On Tuesday 26th<\/sup> January, my Rt hon Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs, having concluded the ODA allocations of the Spending Review, issued a statement outlining each Department\u2019s total ODA settlement. At present, I am working with officials to determine how best to allocate BEIS\u2019s allocation on a fund-by-fund basis, in line with the Strategic Framework for UK ODA.<\/p>"}
