star this property answer text <p>Changes were introduced to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme in April 2018 to allow for the equalisation of survivor benefits for widows. This Scheme followed the Supreme Court’s determination in the case of Walker v Innospec Limited in 2017.</p><p>Since then, the Department has received two representations from scheme members, regarding equalisation for widowers of opposite sex marriages.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Department is taking forward an ambitious programme of reform which will respect head teachers’ powers to use exclusion, while equipping schools to support children at risk of exclusion and ensuring excluded children continue to receive a good education. The Department has already begun engaging with stakeholders including schools and local authorities on these reforms.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, the Government committed to establishing a practice programme that embeds effective partnership working between local authorities, schools, alternative provision, and other partners.</p><p> </p><p>This will better equip schools to intervene early for children at risk of exclusion and to ensure that the most effective provision is put in place for those who are excluded.</p><p>The Department will also re-write guidance on exclusions and behaviour to offer clearer, more consistent guidance to schools on managing behaviour, the use of in-school units, managed moves and the circumstances where it may be appropriate to use exclusion.</p><p> </p><p>Guidance will be published by summer 2020 and more details on the practice programme will be announced in due course.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Average class size figures for state-funded schools in England are calculated and published annually in the statistical first releases available at: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/statistics-school-and-pupil-numbers" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/statistics-school-and-pupil-numbers</a>.</p><p>A national summary of average class sizes for Key Stages 1 and 2 and secondary is in the link to national tables, tables 6a and 6b respectively.</p><p>A summary at local authority and regional level is only available for Key Stages 1 and 2 and is in the link to local authority and regional tables, table 11.</p><p>Data is not summarised by parliamentary constituency, but data for each school providing average class sizes for Key Stages 1 and 2, where appropriate, and overall is available via the link to underlying tables for each year then the file ‘…Schools_Classes_UD’. The figures can be filtered by school phase, local authority and parliamentary constituency.</p><p>A UK figure is not available. As education is a devolved matter, statistics on schools are published separately by the four administrations.</p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>The Department is currently speaking with a broad range of expert organisations about the potential curriculum content for the new compulsory subjects of relationships education (in primary schools) and relationships and sex education (in secondary schools), and in considering whether to make personal, social, health and economic education compulsory.</p><p> </p><p>As part of this work, the Department has been in contact with teachers' representatives and parents’ bodies. The Department has also engaged with the British Heart Foundation, the British Red Cross and St John Ambulance. Discussions have considered whether first aid should be included.</p><p> </p><p>The evidence the Department gathers from these discussions, along with the call for evidence that was launched in December and closes on 12 February 2018, will support the Government’s decisions on compulsory subject content. The Department will formally consult on the draft regulations and guidance before laying the regulations in the House for debate.</p><p> </p>
