The Home Office has had no alternative but to temporarily use hotels in order to give some unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC) emergency accommodation and support while permanent accommodation with a local authority is identified.</p><p>We are determined to end the use of hotels for these young people and Home Office officials work tirelessly with local authorities to move children into care placements through the National Transfer Scheme (NTS).</p><p>To help achieve this, we have provided local authorities with children’s services £15,000 for every eligible young person taken into their care from a Home Office-run hotel dedicated to unaccompanied asylum-seeking children or the Kent Reception and Safe Care Service by the end of February 2023.</p> answering member printed Lord Murray of Blidworth question first answered 25/07/2023 15:09:36 answering member 4950 label Biography information for Lord Murray of Blidworth

	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/07/2023 answer text <p>Police forces are responsible for locating missing children, in their region, in line with standard processes for any missing child in the UK.</p><p>We take the safety of those in our care seriously. We have robust safeguarding procedures in place to ensure all young people in hotels are safe and supported as we seek urgent placements with a local authority.</p><p>Young people are supported by team leaders and support workers who are on site 24 hours a day. Further care is provided in hotels by teams of social workers and nurses. All contingency sites have security staff on site 24/7 and providers liaise closely with local police to ensure the welfare and safety of vulnerable residents.</p><p>If any child including unaccompanied asylum seeking children, goes missing the MARS (Missing After Reasonable Steps) protocol is followed. The local authority will work with multiple agencies to establish the young person's whereabouts and to ensure that they are safe. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/05/2023 answer text <p>The UK has a proud history of supporting refugees and since 2015, the UK has resettled over 28,200 individuals under our UNHCR resettlement schemes, including stateless individuals.</p><p>The UK is proud to welcome refugees through our current resettlement schemes, including the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS), Community Sponsorship and the Mandate Resettlement Scheme.</p><p>UNHCR has responsibility for all out-of-country casework activity relating to the UK’s resettlement schemes, including the identification of people, assessment of their needs and referral to the UK for consideration. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/05/2023 answer text <p>The UK has an approach in place to support individuals who do not meet the requirements of the Immigration Rules but where there are exceptional and compassionate reasons for allowing them to remain here. Discretionary Leave allows an individual to be granted leave outside the Immigration Rules if they do not qualify for refugee status or humanitarian protection, or due to exceptional circumstances relating to their family or private life.</p><p>The UK already operates two sponsorship schemes which share similarities with the United States’ Welcome Corps initiative. The first is the Community Sponsorship Scheme, launched in 2016, which enables civil society to directly support refugees resettled to the UK through identifying housing and providing integration support. Those who need international protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach – that is the fastest route to safety.</p><p>Our resettlement schemes already provide safe and legal routes for tens of thousands of people to start new lives in the UK. The situation is very complex and presents significant challenges, including how those who are eligible for resettlement in the UK can leave Afghanistan.</p><p>This includes the eligible family members of those being resettled under the ACRS. We have comprehensive statutory and policy safeguards in place for caring for and safeguarding unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC).</p><p>Social workers and the courts are best placed to make decisions for vulnerable children, in consideration of all the factors involved in often complex cases. Children should be cared for in a way that recognises and respects their identity and carers should be given the training and support they need to meet the child’s needs.</p><p>Local authorities are responsible for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children in their area, including their mental health and emotional wellbeing needs, regardless of their immigration status. Independent Child Trafficking Guardians (ICTGs) are provided in addition to this statutory support and are an additional source of advice and support for potentially trafficked children, irrespective of nationality, and somebody who can advocate on their behalf.</p><p>Due to the specialist nature of the ICTG service there is currently no intention to expand the scope to include all young asylum-seeking children in England and Wales whether or not they are separated from their parents.</p><p>There are other provisions already in place to provide support for migrant children. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/02/2023 answer text <p>We are committed to ensuring that the National Referral Mechanism effectively supports genuine victims to recover from their modern slavery experience and to support the prosecution of their exploiters.</p><p> </p><p>Following a positive Conclusive Grounds decision, if a victim is being supported by the Modern Slavery Victim Care Contract, they will receive accommodation, financial support, and access to a support worker where necessary, until they no longer have a recovery need for this support, or until their recovery needs are met by alternative services.</p><p> </p><p>It is also a government priority to increase prosecutions of perpetrators of modern slavery.
