answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/02/2019 answer text <p><del class="ministerial">While we have seen some success with voluntary measures to improve online safety, Government has been clear that tech companies need to take more consistent and effective action to tackle online harms.</del></p><p> </p><p><del class="ministerial">A joint DCMS-Home Office White Paper will be published shortly, setting out clear responsibilities for tech companies to keep their users safe online</del>.</p><p> </p><p><ins class="ministerial">The Government recently set up the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation to provide independent, expert advice on the measures needed to enable and ensure safe, ethical and innovative uses of AI and data-driven technologies.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">The first two projects the Centre will study include: the use of data in shaping people's online experiences; and the potential for bias in decisions made using algorithms. This work will play an important role in promoting and ensuring fairness and the ethical use of data to deliver maximum benefits for society. An interim update on these projects is expected in summer 2019.</ins></p><p> </p><p><ins class="ministerial">Further, it is essential that AI developed in the UK reflects the needs and make-up of society as a whole and that industry and the public sector are able to access the greatest supply of talent in terms of numbers. Increasing diversity in the AI workforce is vital to ensure that everyone with the potential to participate has the opportunity to do so. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/04/2019 answer text <p>The Government has ambitious targets for world class digital infrastructure with 15 million premises connected to full fibre by 2025, and national coverage by 2033. The Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review, published in July 2018, set out the overall strategy for how to achieve these targets.</p><p> </p><p>The Review concluded the most effective way to deliver these ambitions is to promote competition between fibre networks where possible intervene where necessary. The Review’s analysis suggests that commercial investment will be viable for up to 90% of premises in the UK. To ensure deployment is as cheap and easy as possible, the Barrier Busting Task Force has been established to remove issues like wayleaves, planning and streetworks.</p><p> </p><p>The Local Full Fibre Networks programme, launched in November 2017, will have invested almost £300 million to stimulate commercial full fibre investment across the UK by the end of the programme in 2021, while</p><p>Government is also supporting competitive commercial investment through the £400 million Digital Infrastructure Investment Fund, which is expected to unlock over £1 billion investment in full fibre.</p><p> </p><p>Industry have continued to respond with commitments to full fibre rollout with CityFibre, Hyperoptic and Openreach all making significant announcements to deploy full fibre in a number of towns and cities across the UK as well as new entrants also entering the market. The changes to workforce structure that resulted from this growth have caused our median gender pay gap to increase, although our individual mean and median gaps for grades D - A (see attached table) indicate that DCMS employees are paid equally for work of equal responsibility. The major elements for 4G and 5G are generated through well respected standards organisations with good industry and regulator involvement. Industry stakeholders use these bodies to agree relevant interoperability definitions between all major elements.</p><p> </p><p>My Department is leading a cross-Government review into the supply chain arrangements for the UK’s telecoms infrastructure. The Review is considering both the technology and economic aspects of the supply chain &amp; the development and adoption of technology standards are relevant factors.
