star this property answer text Living conditions remain challenging due to overcrowding in camps, but my department is working to improve them. We are ensuring better healthcare for refugees - particularly for vulnerable groups including children. The UK has worked with the international community on the humanitarian response plan (HRP) agreed with the international community in September 2017. My department has been working on preparedness measures for the monsoon and cyclone season in Bangladesh since December, working with several other agencies. UK aid has ensured existing shelters of around 158,000 people in camps and host communities most at risk will be upgraded to better withstand severe weather

more like this

Our longstanding support to UNRWA provides primary healthcare to 1.3 million people in Gaza. The UK regularly raises the issuance of medical permits, which is vital for healthcare for Gazans, with the Israeli authorities.

b) The UK will work with Israel, the Palestinian Authority, other donors and the Office of the Quartet to provide a sustainable electricity supply to Gaza. This requires greater domestic electricity capacity and energy imports from Israel and Egypt as well as institutional reform.

c) UK funding to UNICEF is helping 2 million Gazans access clean safe water and stopping the spread of disease by providing over 1000 roof water tanks and disinfecting 280 wells, 38 desalination plants and 40 reservoirs.

d) The UK has already provided support to water infrastructure and will support other infrastructure investments through our new economic development programme. We welcome the proposals of UN Special Representative of the Secretary General, Mladenov, and are keen to see further details.

star this property answer text
Yemen relies on imports to meet 90% of its basic needs like food and fuel. Humanitarian aid provides only 5-15% of the total need: commercial imports supply the rest.

The effectiveness of the delivery of both commercial and humanitarian goods through Yemeni ports remains significantly below the level needed. In March, only 45% of the estimated monthly food needs and 51% of the monthly fuel needs have been met through imports via all sea ports.

One way we are supporting commercial imports into Red Sea ports is through our support to the UN Verification Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM). We are providing £1.3 million to UNVIM this financial year (2017/18) and have provided UK experts on the ground in Djibouti. This extra capacity has enabled UNVIM to increase its physical inspections of commercial ships fivefold. This provides assurances to the Saudi-led Coalition that shipments are legitimate and not a threat to their national security.
more like this

star this property answer text
Yemen imports almost all of its fuel. Consistent fuel supplies are critical to an effective humanitarian response - fuel supports vital infrastructure including water supplies for major cities, grain mills, and hospital generators, as well as enables the delivery of urgent food supplies and clean water across the country.

While the level of fuel imported to Yemen has recently improved, it remains below the country’s needs - 81% of the monthly fuel needs were met through imports via all ports in April compared to 65% in March. Furthermore, the price of fuel remains higher than the level before restrictions were put in place in November. For example, diesel costs over 40% more than one year ago. This is partly due to a decrease in the value of the Yemeni currency.

The UK will continue to call on all parties to the conflict to allow unhindered humanitarian and commercial access throughout Yemen, including for fuel.
more like this

Although new cases have declined, cholera is likely to resurge during the upcoming rainy season. Estimates put 74% of districts (representing 22 million people) at risk.

The reason that cholera, a treatable condition which stems from using contaminated water, is so difficult to control is because systems like public health and water and sanitation have broken down.

DFID provided £8 million in the financial year 2017/18 to UNICEF and the International Organization for Migration for prevention, for example providing households with chlorine tablets for drinking water, and treatment for those who are affected. We are now encouraging the UN to have a robust preparedness plan for the upcoming rainy season and have helped to fund the planned cholera vaccination campaign through our core-funding to GAVI.
more like this
