answer text <p>The Epilepsy Society paper presents the findings of the National General Practice Study of Epilepsy (NGPSE), a 25-year cohort analysis of 558 people having recurring unprovoked seizures, and also considers more widely the issue of premature mortality and death in epilepsy. The NGPSE study found that 189 (34%) of the cohort died during the 25 year follow-up period, and six people in this group (3%) had died directly due to their epilepsy. The NGPSE also found a frequent link between co-morbidity in epilepsy and death.</p><p>Increasing numbers of people have multiple long term conditions (LTCs), not just single diseases, and that the management of comorbidity and multimorbidity presents a significant challenge to the National Health Service. It is an issue highlighted in the Five Year Forward View and defined as a central task of the NHS. Improving the support and choice provided to people with LTCs and enabling them to live healthy independent lives remains a key ambition for this Government. NHS England is responding with specific actions to improve the delivery of personalised care planning, self-management support and personal health budgets, as well as helping to support the development of new service models that deliver care that is more proactive and less reactive in the management of patients with LTCs. However, in recognition of this increasing problem, NICE is also working to produce a new clinical guideline on the management of multimorbidity in a range of common conditions which is scheduled for publication in September 2016.</p><p>Regarding the matter of variation in epilepsy mortality, the Neurology Intelligence Network (NIN), a partnership programme between Public Health England (PHE) and NHS England, has produced a detailed epilepsy profile presenting data at clinical commissioning group (CGG) level against 20 separate indicators, including mortality. CGGs should consider mortality rates alongside other indicators such as prevalence and unplanned admission rates, and in the wider socioeconomic context of their local area to understand the challenges and consider what improvement activity may be appropriate. NHS England is also taking specific action to target unwarranted variation in treatment and outcomes across range of conditions, including epilepsy, through the Rightcare Programme, which is being rolled out to all CCGs in 2016-17. answer text <p>Our White Paper, Education Excellence Everywhere, sets out the range of support we will offer to schools across England.</p><p> </p><p>Where schools are failing, Regional Schools Commissioners will identify a suitable academy sponsor to turn them around. In areas where there are too few sponsors, we will recruit new sponsors, including high-performing schools and more sponsors from business, charity and philanthropy. We will also encourage existing sponsors to expand, increasing incentives and minimising barriers, learning from the investment we have already made through the Northern Sponsor Fund.</p><p> </p><p>For other struggling schools, we will ensure there is nationwide coverage of system leaders (teaching schools and National Leaders of Education), who will be expected to work with weaker schools to support them to improve. To help achieve this, we will improve how we designate system leaders by introducing a more sophisticated approach based on timely and accurate data rather than relying heavily on Ofsted judgements. We will also partner schools with the potential to become strong system leaders with existing teaching schools and National Leaders of Education.</p><p> </p><p>Through the Department’s strategy for Achieving Excellence Areas, we will target our existing programmes to secure sufficient high quality teachers, leaders, system leaders, sponsors and members of governing boards on the areas of greatest need. At the Budget, the Government announced that we will invest an additional £20 million a year to build on this strategy to raise education standards across the Northern Powerhouse. The allocation of this funding will depend on the identified need and will be reassessed each year, based on the evidence.</p><p>For the additional funding announced in the budget, decisions on how the funding will be allocated for the 2016-17 financial year will be made by the autumn of this year and will be informed by the emerging findings of the review by Sir Nick Weller. We will be publishing the terms of reference for Sir Nick Weller’s review shortly.</p>

answer text <p>The National Health Service has made no such assessment.</p><p>The NHS has to comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH). This applies in the workplace when hazardous substances are manufactured, used or where processes are undertaken that generate hazardous substances. COSHH requires the employer to carry out a risk assessment to establish what, if any, hazards are associated with products/processes employees are using/undertaking and then put measures in place to control exposure to those hazards.</p> more like this

Whilst there is no specific audit planned that covers all cases of avoidable deaths from epilepsy, the following NCAPOP audits and reviews are of relevance:</p><p>- The audit for paediatric epilepsy, which is being re-commissioned this year, covers the quality of health care services for children and young people with epilepsy in the United Kingdom. answer text <p>Since the Prime Minister set out plans for the Centenary in October 2012 the Government has delivered highly successful commemorative events for the start of the First World War and the Gallipoli Campaign.</p><p>In May 2016, commemorative events will be held for the Battle of Jutland, and in July 2016, we will mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme by holding national events at the Thiepval Memorial in France, at Manchester Cathedral, and at Heaton Park. In addition, a national vigil will be held in June at Westminster Abbey, and there will also be vigils in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.</p><p>Season Two of the 14-18 NOW culture programme has been announced and this - together with Centenary Partnership events, Heritage Lottery funded projects and local commemorative activity - will ensure people right across the UK have the opportunity to participate in commemorative events.</p><p>Other centenary activities such as the UK Tour of the “poppies” and the national repair and conservation of War memorials also continue, more details can be found at <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/first-world-war-centenary" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/first-world-war-centenary</a></p>
