answer text <p>British Embassy officials have been monitoring the Kobane trials in person and will continue to do so, alongside other like-mind missions. We follow events in Turkey carefully, particularly government moves to close down the People's Democratic Party (HDP), the lifting of immunity for its MPs, and the replacement of opposition mayors by state-appointed officials. While these decisions are for the Turkish Government, we expect Turkey to undertake legal processes fairly, transparently and with full respect for the rule of law.</p> more like this

answer text <p>We have long encouraged Turkey to work towards the full protection of fundamental rights. We are closely monitoring reports of the the widespread use of anti-terror legislation to silence critics of the state and encourage Turkey to ensure that all charges under the legislation are carried out in a proportionate and transparent manner.</p><p>His Majesty's Government has no locus to intervene in Turkish domestic legal cases but our Embassy in Ankara frequently monitors high-profile trials. We will continue to raise specific cases with the Turkish government and through the Council of Europe.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Conditional engagement, tied to UNSCR 2254, is more likely to advance the political process. Conditions in Syria do not currently allow for safe return of refugees. Previous regime 'amnesties' have not been reliable. Genuine progress on arbitrary detention, missing persons and the justice sector would help to establish conditions to enable returns. While we welcome increased humanitarian access following the February earthquakes and call for it to be sustained, we note that previous limits were due to regime and Russian obstruction.</p> more like this
