answer text
In 2015/16, all woodchip used in the electricity sector was sourced from the UK, with a very small amount from Ireland (less than 0.1% of biomass in 2015/16[1]). Almost all woodchip used in the Renewable Heat Incentive was sourced from the UK, with a small amount from European sources. Our subsidy schemes fully account for the carbon emissions associated with the supply chain (harvesting, processing, transporting) and from changes in land use within the forestry sector.

To receive government support for heat and power generation from biomass, all biomass must comply with the UK’s sustainability criteria, which includes a minimum 60% greenhouse gas lifecycle saving and for the biomass to be sourced from sustainable managed forests.

[1] https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications-and-updates/biomass-sustainability-dataset-2015-16

answer text
The Government remains committed to its 2050 target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% relative to 1990 levels. We have already made good progress towards this as the latest confirmed figures show UK emissions in 2015 were 38% lower than in 1990. Within this, emissions in both the power and industry sectors have nearly halved since 1990.
more like this

answer text
The Department for International Trade works with key UK suppliers, foreign Governments, sector focussed trade associations and procuring authorities to increase exports in the renewable energy and low carbon technology sectors.

Understanding the UK’s capability and matching it with relevant high value export opportunities overseas forms part of the work of our renewable energy sector team. Alongside this the Department for International Trade undertakes a range of promotion activities to support the export of renewable energy and low carbon technologies. In support of this UK Export Finance, the UK’s export credit agency, offers finance and insurance to help UK-based companies of all sizes and across all sectors (including the renewable energy and low carbon technology sectors) win, fulfil and get paid for overseas sales, ensuring that no viable UK export fails for lack of finance or insurance.

UKEF recently provided support to BurntIsland Fabrications Ltd (BiFab) for a contract worth in excess of £100 million, helping secure jobs at BiFab’s three UK manufacturing sites. BiFab makes high-quality steel fabrications for the offshore renewables sector.

The UK has long supported the promotion of our values globally and this will continue as we leave the EU. In addition, the UK is party to around 30 international environmental agreements and treaties in its own right and will continue to be bound by the obligations they contain.
