answer text
The UK is deeply concerned about the intensifying conflict in Kachin and Northern Shan states. We raised our concerns about credible reports of human rights abuses and violations in those regions at the Human Rights Council's Interactive Dialogue with the Fact Finding Mission on Burma on 19 September 2017. The British Ambassador in Rangoon visited Kachin State from 8 to 10 January 2018 to discuss the situation with local political and religious leaders as well as UN and non-governmental organisation representatives, and visit an Internally Displaced Persons camp. The UK has contributed £4.1 million this financial year to humanitarian assistance for conflict affected people in Kachin and Northern Shan States, including in non-government controlled areas.
more like this

answer text
The Thames Tideway Tunnel is not a Government project and would therefore not normally be subject to IPA oversight and monitoring. However, given the scale and nature of the project, it was decided that IPA would provide oversight and assurance for the set-up of the project.

The IPA confirmed that the conditions were right to return the project to DEFRA assurance through a Project Assessment Review in May 2016 and formally returned responsibility in 2017. This was only done once IPA were content that DEFRA had strong and appropriate assurance in place to ensure HMG’s interests were protected, and was documented through an exchange of letters between the CEO of the IPA and the DEFRA Accounting Officer.

Although no longer on the Government major projects portfolio, DEFRA and IPA continue to work closely together on the project.

more like this

answer text
The Government has yet to receive the formal text of the outcome of the trilogue discussions and we will consider it carefully. There are several targets in the circular economy package of which the 65% recycling by weight target by 2035 is just one.

The Government has committed to publishing a new Resources and Waste Strategy in 2018 aimed at making the UK a world leader in resource efficiency. It will ensure resources are kept in use for longer and set out how we will work towards eliminating all avoidable waste by 2050, and all avoidable plastic waste by the end of 2042. This is consistent with the EU’s Circular Economy Package and in some respects goes beyond it.

As we develop the Resources and Waste Strategy we will explore whether more innovative targets can be developed that deliver clear benefits over those proposed by the EU, including weight-based measures. Should they be preferable, the UK Government will present proposals to the UK Parliament following the UK’s departure from the EU.

answer text
As the Prime Minister made clear in her speech at the Lord Mayor's Banquet last year, the UK will do what is necessary to protect ourselves, and work with our allies to do likewise. The UK has deployed a battlegroup to Estonia as a framework nation for NATO's enhanced forward presence, and has made regular deployments of Typhoon fighter aircraft conducting NATO air policing. This contribution to Alliance missions demonstrates our commitment to the principle of collective defence and is a measured response to the security challenge posed by Russia.

We know that the Kremlin persistently uses disinformation as a tool to destabilise perceived enemies. This is not new and was evident in Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea, its rhetoric around Syrian regime backed chemical weapons attacks on innocent civilians, and remains so with Russia's destabilisation of east Ukraine and beyond. The best defence against disinformation is a free, wide and varied media landscape. To this end, the UK Government is spending approximately £100 million over five years including in Eastern Europe, for the purpose of countering Russian disinformation.
