answer text
DFID has conducted a series of research studies on pastoralism, including on the effects of climate change and environmental stresses. Papers and reports from this research are published here: https://www.gov.uk/dfid-research-outputs?keywords=pastoralism+and+climate+change.

DFID has recently announced a new programme the “Supporting Pastoralism & Agriculture in Recurrent & Protracted Crises (SPARC)” programme (2020 - 2026) which aims to assist poor and vulnerable people to better cope with and build their resilience to climate change and recurring shocks, delivering evidence which will improve DFID programmes and policies supporting pastoral communities. The programme builds on a number of previous programmes which have focused on improving the resilience of pastoralist communities, including the Karamoja Resilience programme in Northern Uganda, and the Building Resilience and Adapting to Climate Extremes and Disasters (BRACED) programme in the Sahel.

answer text
We follow closely the human rights situation in Syria, including north-east Syria. We are concerned at reported violations of international humanitarian law in the context of the Turkish military intervention and have called on all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law. As a party to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, we will continue to work closely with international partners in pursuit of justice for the victims of Daesh in Syria and Iraq. The British Government supports the UN mechanisms to monitor and gather evidence of any war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity committed in Syria, namely the UN Commission of Inquiry for Syria and the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism for Syria.
more like this

answer text
The UK has played a leading role in the development of Education Cannot Wait – a fund for education in emergencies. A key focus for Education Cannot Wait will be on ensuring that marginalised children and young people are able to access a quality education. This includes refugees and internally displaced children, as well as children facing barriers to their education because of their gender, disability or other factors.

This focus is reflected in the Fund’s indicative headline results, which commits to providing “Inclusive education [that] reaches the most marginalised children and young people in crises” with a target of “100% of supported education opportunities demonstrate increase in education for girls, disabled and those in remote locations”.

The UK will continue to engage closely during Education Cannot Wait’s inception phase, to ensure that this commitment is fully reflected in its final design and results frameworks.
more like this

answer text
In 2014, NHS England, Monitor and the Trust Development Authority (TDA) commissioned research from four consultancies including KPMG to support 11 challenged local health economies, including Staffordshire, with the development and strengthening of their strategic plans. An overarching summary, Making Local Health Economies Work Better For Patients, was published by NHS England, Monitor and TDA in December 2014.

We are advised that consultancy firms (including the case of KPMG in Staffordshire), were not commissioned to produce a report as described in the question, but to support the local health economies (LHEs) with the development and strengthening of their strategic plans.

Work based on this support is ongoing, and a number of steps have to be taken in each of the LHEs. These include the consideration of strategic plans, consultations on possible reforms and the implementation of recommendations flowing from this. To release information ahead of these steps could prejudice the outcome.

answer text We are concerned at reports of detentions in relation to the 25th anniversary of Tiananmen Square and raised our concerns about this with the Chinese authorities during the UK-China Human Rights Dialogue on 20 May. The Minister of State, my Rt. Hon. Friend the Member for East Devon (Mr Swire), raised this issue with the Chinese authorities on 19 May and made a statement on this issue on 21 May. We also fully support the EU statement of 28 May calling for the release of all those imprisoned for the peaceful expression of their views. We were pleased to see that on 5 June, the Chinese authorities released a number of those arrested after attending an event to commemorate the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989. more like this
