The churches play a critical role in peace-making and building at the local and national level in South Sudan, including in Abyei. We are engaging with the churches to follow up on the messages delivered during the ecumenical visit to Juba from 3 to 5 February. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 28/07/2022 answer text <p>We note the Elie Wiesel Act report to Congress by the US State Department and share the concerns highlighted regarding intercommunal violence in Abyei. The UK has taken a leading role in supporting the wider processes for justice and accountability in Sudan and South Sudan, and will continue to call for accountability for crimes committed in Abyei. We urge the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan to regularise meetings of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee and agree joint security mechanisms to improve stability in Abyei until its final status can be agreed. Most recently, the UK Special Representative to Sudan and South Sudan discussed Abyei with Sudanese authorities on 28 June in Khartoum, and will discuss this issue with the South Sudanese authorities in Juba later this month.</p><p>The UK Government is heavily engaged with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and we welcomed their mandate renewal from the UN Security Council on 12 May. We join the UN Secretary-General's call for the African Union to intensify its mediation efforts to help reach a political solution for Abyei. We expressed our concerns at the violence at the UN Security Council on 21 April and underscored the continued need for the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), mandated to provide protection of civilians and facilitate delivery of humanitarian aid. Over the past year, the UN Security Council has ensured that UNISFA's mandate better equips the mission to respond quickly to security incidents and to place greater emphasis on community engagement.</p><p>We are working with the UN and the humanitarian community in Sudan and South Sudan to address humanitarian needs in Abyei. As part of this, in 2021 we contributed £27 million to the humanitarian response in Sudan via partners, including the World Food Programme. This year in South Sudan we will reach 2 million people with some form of humanitarian assistance and support 400,000 girls to access education, including in the Abyei region. We are supporting IGAD's efforts to revitalise the 2015 peace agreement through its High Level Revitalisation Forum.</p><p>We are urging IGAD to take action against those who have violated the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, signed in December by all parties. Following the declaration of famine, the Secretary of State for International Development, my Rt Hon. Friend, the Member for Witham (Ms Patel) announced a £100 million package of emergency assistance that will help to provide vital life-saving nutritional, health and livelihoods support for the people of South Sudan. Together with our international partners, the UK continues to pursue every opportunity to call on all parties in the conflict in South Sudan urgently to cease all hostilities, ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those who need it most and engage in a genuine, inclusive dialogue. Multilaterally, we are lobbying for support of a UN arms embargo, and continue to support the imposition of sanctions against those who would continue to block the path to peace. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 27/07/2016 answer text <p>Prior to the eruption of fighting in Juba in early July 2016, the humanitarian situation in South Sudan was already dire, with unprecedented levels of food insecurity and one in five people displaced. In the aftermath of the recent crisis, we assess that the situation is now worse than it has ever been since independence in 2011. Six million people, over half the population, need urgent humanitarian assistance. The UK is the second largest bilateral humanitarian donor, contributing £242 million since the start of the conflict in December 2013. In December 2015, DFID approved a significant five year (2015-2020) humanitarian programme for South Sudan. This programme has been structured to enable DFID and our partners to respond to rising or changing needs.</p><p> </p><p>In addition it is likely to prove necessary to scale up urgent humanitarian assistance in order to maintain vital food and nutrition supply lines, and reduce the risk of famine. We will also continue to ensure that South Sudan’s most vulnerable people are able to access vital health and education services. Our humanitarian partners, including the International Committee of the Red Cross and UNICEF (who both receive DFID funding) were able to mobilise responses for those displaced by the recent fighting in Juba, including the provision of water, food and health services.
